SSWW Mini Reindeer & Sleigh

Hello everyone, I'm thinking of trying to cut out the Mini Reindeer & Sleigh. This looks like it is a compound cut. Any suggestions on how to do this? I've ever attempted compounds cuts yet.

I don't get the mag or the patterns anymore, but if the pattern has a dotted line down the center, yes it is compound.

Stick the pattern to a block of wood with the dotted line on the edge of the block.  Then cut one side, tape it all together, and cut the other side

Not all us girls read directions,  but we do look at the pictures.  Actually I have done a lot of compound cuts and they can be testy if you don't pay attention.  Check out the video on YouTube.  There are a lot of videos there on the subject.  Here is just one of them.  Good luck.

Compound cuts are not difficult. Make sure your wood is square on all sides. Make sure your pattern is attached square to the wood with dotted line on the correct edge.

I've done a Reindeer, just not brave enough to do it on a Scrollsaw    I did mine on my trusty old Bandsaw

I've seen compound projects that require a clamp after the first side is cut to keep the cut piece in place. Check to see if you need that. RJF

You can also wrap the block with clear tape to keep the pieces together.  The tape will also lubricate your blade.

I have made a lot of the reindeer and given them away as ornaments.  The biggest was about 6" and the smallest about 1" .  Any smaller and the antlers are impossible.  But if someone can make a smaller one, I would love to see it.

Check out rick Hutchinson's site. Scrollsaws. Com under miniature projects. I've seen him cut those no pattern.

Jim, yes those patterns you are referencing are compound cuts. There are some older threads on here from a year or so ago about doing compound cutting. There was lots of good information and tips provided from several folks here in the Village that was quite good and very helpful. I will see if I can locate again and give link to it. One of the biggest tips I got from it was to not use a reverse tooth blade, but use a skip tooth blade.
