Popular Post RabidAlien Posted October 7, 2019 Popular Post Report Posted October 7, 2019 My daughter had requested a shadow-box cutting with a dragon in it. I tried coming up with one on my own, but it never seemed to work out or line up....so I found, quite by accident, that paper-crafting uses almost the exact same templates that scrolling does, AND there were several dragon shadowbox patterns already out there! Xacto blades can cut smaller precision holes than my current drillbit will allow, so there are a couple that are missing (there are supposed to be two TINY holes where her fingers are), but overall, this was a fairly quick cut. Be prepared for a lot of angles, though, this pattern is a perfect way to learn how to make sharp corners. I did modify the pattern slightly, I added three layers of frame-only (far right of the pic where everything is drying on the towel). It helps give it some depth and lets the layers pop a bit. I just took the layer with the dragon, then deleted everything from the center and stack-cut all three at once and glued them in between the four "pattern" layers. Pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern-frame-pattern. 3/8" BB ply, used several blades (broke two Pegas #2/0 blades, finished up with a Pegas #3MG...need to order new blades....), stained Minwax Cherry. If I were to cut this again (and I might....it was a fun cut), I think staining the dragon/princess layer a darker color (or lighter, if I go with a dark stain overall) would be the way to go. Pattern is by "PaperLightBoxDesign", $5US from Etsy. https://www.etsy.com/listing/608543517/princess-dragon-paper-cutting-light-box?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=dragon shadow box&ref=sr_gallery-1-6&fbclid=IwAR0exVbazDksiw8Z0FNaAvnKFCpztSlqWuWDL7e7xZMpqOgEpfafTU81-fw frankorona, Wilson142, Scrolling Steve and 11 others 14 Quote

Ron Johnson Posted October 7, 2019 Report Posted October 7, 2019 (edited) I bet your little princess had a smile from ear to ear when she received this beautiful gift. Shadow boxes are a lot of fun creating and you did a beautiful job of this one Kirk. Edited October 7, 2019 by Ron Johnson RabidAlien 1 Quote
JimErn Posted October 7, 2019 Report Posted October 7, 2019 Very well done. I think that is a great idea, I might carry it one step further and have the dragon and the girl different colors/shades RabidAlien 1 Quote

I've heard one scroller uses rubber cement to create a "dam" on one side of the dividing line...stain....peel off the rubber cement...put another "dam" on the freshly stained side and then stain the rest, but haven't gotten a chance to give it a try yet. You can also use a razor knife to draw a line separating the two, then use an artists brush. In this one, all I did was use an artists brush, put the lighter shade on first amazingkevin and RabidAlien 2 Quote
