Very nice work Gary! I cut a dozen of those for my up coming shows!

Thanks! I thought I would try one first. It came out OK so I'll stack cut some more to sell.

What finishes do you use, or which ones sell best? I did a clear spray lacquer on the fret and Minwax Early American on the backer.

Hey Gary, first off, I never use Baltic birch. I always use hardwoods. I used 1/4” maple for the overlay and Mahogany for the backer. To bring out the color and grain, I use a 50/50 mixture of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. Then when dry, I topcoat with Deft semi gloss spray lacquer. I have them priced at $24 each. My first show of the year is this Sunday, so I will see how they will sell.

Thanks Dan! That gives me a game plan instead of just guessing. This forum is full of fantastic people!

I'm assuming the Mahogany is also 1/4" I am getting ready to order some hardwood as I'm wanting to make a couple of clocks.

Does anyone ever use Oak? I never see it mentioned here.

Yes, the backer is 1/4”. And yes, I do use oak, red, white and other species I can find out here in the West. Some may try to discourage you from using oak because of the wild grain, but I never have a problem cutting oak.
