John B
Have been re-sawing some western red cedar. I was given 1/2 doz 100mm x 100mm veranda posts. I like the smell, but but only in small doses. Had to evacuate the shed. Letting it settle before I run the boards through the thicknesser and sander. That stuff stinks. Foxfold
Slowly, slowly catch the monkey. Keep doing a little at a time and keep the thought of lots of lovely free wood and imagine all you could make out of it. That will keep you going. !!! JimErn
respirator and something like that WEN air filter hanging in the air is almost a necessity with WRC. Sanding is worse than cutting, but it is a pretty wood. John B and OCtoolguy 1
GrampaJim
I use very little WRC. It the only wood that gives me an allergic reaction. That's with using a dust mask, dust collector, AND a air filter. Too bad because I really like the look of it and how nice it is to cut and sand. Fish
I use a mask and I love the smell of that wood. I made a small jewelry box with it. OCtoolguy and John B
Woodmaster1
I like the smell. We have a fellow that brings in camphor to turn on the lathe and it makes the club shop smell like camphor. I think that smell is worse than red cedar. Take the suggestions and wear a mask and don't stay at it for long periods of time. Dee
OMG, Cedar smells sooooo good to me. I use it a lot. It can get a bit strong, but let me say that the bugs do NOT like cedar at all. I save my scraps and put them in my closets, drawers, and under some of the furniture just to keep the bugs out of the house. That is why people used to use cedar chests a lot too. But then I live in the west in cedar country. Edited October 18, 2019 by Dee OCtoolguy and John B
Gonzo
I too love the smell of cedar. Reminds me of Grandma's house. An old timer told me to ALWAYS use a dust mask when working with cedar. Since old timers never worried about stuff like that I figured I better heed his advice. Denny Knappen
I end up sneezing working with cedar, so I always wear a mask. John B and OCtoolguy
