oldhudson Posted November 1, 2019 Report Posted November 1, 2019 I'm trying a cake topper for a wedding. Overall size is about 7.5 wide and 5.5 high. What stock should I cut this from? A Baltic birch PW or a hardwood. And how thick are these things usually 1/4 or 3/8 or ?? I'd appreciate any help you can provide - Thanks! OCtoolguy 1 Quote
JimErn Posted November 1, 2019 Report Posted November 1, 2019 I would use hard wood with mineral oil finish. Mineral oil is food safe. Plywood has glue holding it together, I would not use it with food for that reason alone. How thick really depends on the weight of whatever is going to be placed on it, plastic bride and groom is lighter than ceramic< I wold try to use 1/4 or 3/8 at the most OCtoolguy 1 Quote
teachnlearn Posted November 1, 2019 Report Posted November 1, 2019 Wedding cakes use plastic or wooden dowels with cardboard flats to stack and support the next level. Even if the cake is one level, let the baker know the topper weight an size. If they don't prepare some support, the topper may sink into the cake. Ah weddings. My wife and I married 30 years ago in Hawaii, living in a homeless shelter. Twisted romance, HUH? RJF OCtoolguy 1 Quote
