My birthday present arrived

My son bought me a pegas scroll saw. It runs really smooth. Haven't gotten to work on it to much. I was wondering if I should get a mat to put on the table so I won't scratch  it so much. Or would plexiglass glass be better.

Congratulations Mimi! I think you will be fine if you just keep the table waxed.

You can't keep it looking new if you use it. When my tablesaw was new maybe I had it two weeks my neighbor set a pop can on the table and I have a ring stain that's seven years old. I remind him every now and then about it. I just have not been able to return the favor yet. He hasn't bought any new equipment. Awesome looking saw I hope you enjoy it and make a ton of projects.

Bugger, same thing happened to my bandsaw. The neighbour popped over to have a look at it and have a beer, . He sat his can on the table and the stain is there for perpetuity.
 

Congratulations @Mimi, I'm jealous ;). Don't worry to much about how the saw looks, just enjoy using it. It will gather it's scars over the years, like we all do.

Well Happy Birthday! Congrats on the awesome gift.. I suppose it's up to you on the table covering.. I'm kinda funny on taking care of my tools and wax the whole machine, stand and all when i wax the table.. keep them clean as possible etc..  IF I was going to cover the table... I probably would go with the thin magnetic sheets like seyco saws use and cut it to size.. I believe several folks have done that on their Excalibur saws.. not to protect the table but to cover those dust collector holes and seem to get small pieces that drop out of your cut and bind your board up.. watch it with those.. they can really mess you and a project up  when that happens..

I am one of those Kevin ( @kmmcrafts) was talking about, I bought a roll of magnetic sheet material off amazon and my table (ex-21) is covered with it,  Not only does it cover up those pesky holes, but it allows me to make a zero clearance hole for the blade, it is also very smooth and slippery

The magnetic mat it pretty cheap and works well or a piece of masonite, plexiglass, or hard board stuck down with double-sided tape works good.

I've got an EX21 that was built in 2009. I bought it used. The table has very minor scratches in it. I do as Kevin said. Johnson's paste wax will keep it looking new for a long time. It's sort of like the first scratch or ding in a new car. You hate it when it happens but life goes on anyway. Congrats on the new saw. Have fun and use the heck out of it.

Happy Birthday and now I am jealous.  As far as protecting the table, I swear by Johnson's Paste Wax and so do many others.  As far as scratches, they will come and just like scars, each has a story to tell.

Enjoy your saw, use it and don't worry about blemishes on the table.

Happy birthday and Congrats….Nothing wrong with a few lite scratches.  Scratches are wear marks.  A lite coat of paste wax will help to protect especially in damp conditions.  Normally a tool without scratches is a toll that is not used.
