jerry1939 Posted December 13, 2019 Report Posted December 13, 2019 We live in North Liberty, Iowa. LOTS of geese around here. Over winter, they flock here. 150 miles north of here, a large number of them spent a cold night in a sand quarry a few years ago. Froze in and all of them died. Here they return every year & are OK. jerry RabidAlien and jollyred 1 1 Quote

meflick Posted December 14, 2019 Report Posted December 14, 2019 We have “Canadian geese” that live here in East TN all year long. I think they forget to migrate home in the Spring, and to go further south for the winter. They are mean (having been chased by a few when I was simply walking and not bothering them on a walking trail.) We live on a lake, and they make such a mess in the yard, on the dock, our driveway, in the neighborhood roads, etc. personally the only good goose in my opinion is a dead one. JimErn Posted December 14, 2019 Report Posted December 14, 2019 Geese are territorial, they do get mean and aggressive, I think it is Scotland that uses them as "watchdogs" on a regular basis. But they are dumber than a rock. The Army in Germany decided one year that placing some geese on some very remote secure sites on mountain tops in Germany would be a good thing - should reduce the need for a K-9 security detachment. That of course also meant putting kids wading pools out there too. One cold morning a good number of them were standing in the wading pool frozen in place. Idea never worked out. Plus they were labor intensive, feeding, filling the pools, etc. RabidAlien 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted December 14, 2019 Report Posted December 14, 2019 We have them everywhere, they are a nuisance. They can destroy a golf coarse. They use to migrate south in the winters, but they stay year around now. When I was a kid, and the migration started there would be flocks of thousands fly over. I saw flocks, back then that would take 5 to 10 minutes to fly over. You never opened your mouth when you looked up at them! We lived out in the country and our neighbor use to go out and shoot at them with his 30-06, just for fun. Never saw him hit one which was surprising because there were so many. Quote

Difference between Canadian Geese and Iowa Geese. Canadian Geese always say Sorry. RJF Edited December 15, 2019 by teachnlearn Quote
