Many times the subject has come up here and on other forums/groups regarding the "hockey stick" problems with saw blades. There have been lots of explanations offered but to someone who has very little knowledge of things mechanical or scroll saws I thought this might help. I just ran across this picture in the Excalibur owner's manual. It pretty well shows the problem and how to correct it.

I actually had a situation with my new DW788 that I just received where it was bending the end of the blade and the set screw was exactly where it should have been, BUT it was turning when tightening with the thumbscrew.  I tried blue locktite a couple of times but it wouldn't hold.  I finally put a dab of wood glue on the set screw and it's holding now.  I likely won't ever need to move it so I don't care if it's glued in solid.

I always thought that when people were talking about hockey sticks that the blades were bent like this.

My thought too Dave. This happens when the blade is not sitting all the way back of the clamp and it moves when tightening. Different holders have stops that prevent this. The rbi has a stop as well as Hegner.

That's one dull looking blade..  Sorry.. I just couldn't help myself with that comment..

 

I had a blade issue where the blade looked like this and it was in fact the set screw had moved inwards like those pictures show though.. and I have no idea how you would get this because of that.. maybe it was a combo user error too I don't know.. but the [problem solved once I adjusted the set screw

I top feed with my Pegas and the bottom clap will start to do this after a couple of times clamping. I have tried to figure out how to stop it but no luck.

Every saw is different and being I have no experience with that saw or their clamps I can not help. But there has to be a stop on any blade clamp or else it falls out the back. I know on the Dewalt the clamp has a spinning washer on the end so the screw does not actually contact the blade and grab it and spin it. That is when you would get that type of bend.

I cannot remember if the thumb screws on the pegas clamp have the swivel tips or not.. when I got the upgraded chucks for my Excalibur I didn't like the style of the plastic wings of the thumb screws... so since they was the same threads as the DeWalt.. and I have 8 brand new sets.. I just put in a set of the DeWalt ones in it..

Yes you did mention that. You asked for a pattern to cut for him to celebrate their playing in the World Series as I recall. Did you ever finish a piece for him? If so, did you show it? And speaking of sports - did you see that the LSU QB, Joe Burrow, a grad transfer from Ohio St won the   Heisman Trophy last night? Interesting, all 3 QBs there, were transfers students. All transfers from some of the top football programs to other top programs. It’s becoming a carousel of transfers.  Not sure I am a fan of it, but I can see a little of both sides. Time will tell I suppose. At least my team turned it around this season after not opening the season well. Knew it was going to be a long season when a boat in the “Vol Navy” burned and sank on opening morning of the season. Things turned around though and we are playing in the Gator bowl. Now, if only the coaching staff can continue this upward trajectory and get my beloved Vols back in the mix and winning ways. It’s been a long time.

I was being facetious about that mention of my son. And to answer your question, I never went any further with the project because he told me that most everybody who worked for the organization wasn't all that excited. For reasons I'm sworn to secrecy over. Sorry.

Thanks Melanie. So much is lost in the written word over the spoken word. And, you might be right. I'll have to come up with something to give him later on.
