Thanks everyone.  My brother is the one who told me about the 321. It is 3 parts mineral spirit, 2 parts polyurethane and one part Boiled linseed oil.   It dries really fast and I found using satin finish wasn't what I wanted in the end so I switched to semi gloss and it comes out pretty nice. I have read articles on sanding the first coat in to the wood but I don't know if it would do anything for it.  I've never tried it. I use a second coat right after the first one soaks in and wiping away the excess. I never make more than 3 oz. of mineral spirit, two oz. of poly and one oz. of BLO I'll never use it fast enough. I always use rubber gloves too, wiping it on with a cloth or using a brush.

I did this one from a piece of cherry my brother gave me. I'm gonna give it to him for Christmas. I showed him a little at Thanksgiving on my scroll saw, he's bought a used saw and  gonna give it a try.  If I counted right there is 120 cuts on the outside and 54 on the inside. Total time was probably 4 hours. I finished it with 321.  It's about 3/8" thick and I cut it with a # 1 FD.  Thanks for looking.
