It looks great Ray. In my opinion, you always want a topcoat. Not necessarily for a shine, but to protect the piece. Dust tends to stick to an unfinished surface more that a finished piece.

Thanks Dan. I might consider a semi gloss poly. Not sure I want a gloss like the Zinsser shellac. I'll have to ponder on it.

Looks great Ray... very well done..

Of coarse as with everything every one has a different taste for finishing too.. I like a natural look myself and most people don't seem to... most seem to like a built up topcoat finish... If it were me.. and since Danish oil has a poly in it.. I'd possibly dip it one more time.. or just spray a very light coat o poly on it..

I'm not trying to bore you good folks with pics of my project but my wife found a bowl that just fits in my piece. I think it really looks good this way. She wants to find a bowl that is of a color like red/ruby or blue/cobalt. What do you think? I can't tell because I'm not good with colors. Not color blind, just not good.

I also prefer a natural look, but I really dislike the smell of many of the oils plus they never seem to dry completely.  i have used liberon finishes on a couple of fretwork projects that was not too bad.

I'm going to look into this... never seen it before. You mentioned the smell not being too bad which is my biggest complaint with many finishes too so I'm going to look for some of this at my local store to see if they have it.. I'm almost out of Danish oil again so I'll be making a trip to the store soon..

Thanks for posting this.
