acrylic craft paint- 3 lite coats with a lite sanding between coats and then 1 coat of clear spray paint to add the gloss. No issues with fitting This was painted Baltic Birch plywood. I have 3 more puzzles cut out on poplar and will use dyes to color them.

Any particular reason  you use dyes on the poplar? What type and brand of dyes do you use if I may ask.

i want the grain to show through on the poplar. i use general finishes pre-mixed dyes.
