Popular Post Charlie E
I loved @Nickel Falls's cutting so I found the image and did my take on it. I made it with the intention of selling it in the fundraiser I'm doing next weekend, but I don't think I can part with it. Reminds me too much of holding my dad's hand during church and marveling at the size and toughness of it. Also my grands are at the age where they hold my little finger too. It's on a piece of 1/2" red oak with a live edge. dgman, Dave Monk, flarud and 13 others

spirithorse
Great cutting, Charlie, My only concern over this cutting is that I think the grain really distracts from the cutting itself. Just my humble opinion and my personal observation. I really like the grain near the top that makes it look almost like the fore-arm is continued in the grain pattern but, the rest of the grain is a bit distracting. I really like the patterns you select to cut and you do a wonderful job on all of them. I don't intend to sound negative or critical. Hopefully no hard feelings. God Bless! Spirithorse No hard feelings but I do disagree. I do find busy grain distracting in some portraits/faces, but this one doesn't pose a problem for my eye anyway. But hey, the world would be a boring place if we were all just alike.

Where id you find the pattern? Hi Les. I worked from a picture I found on a poem called My Daddy's Hand. I found it on Google after seeing the piece @Nickel Falls cut. I glued the picture on and it's almost a pattern in itself. I did use a lot of the same lines Nickel Falls did. Mostly just cut the dark places on the picture and make some bridges. Ninuninu
Think I have to agree with Spirithorse here, it is such a beautiful cutting that I personally would treasure... but my eye was drawn to the grain and found it rather distracting. With that said you deserve a BIG well done for this - it IS beautiful. Tony Charlie E

meflick
I like it Charlie and can see why you have decided to keep it. The grain does not detract for me. However, as you say we all have our opinions and not everyone will agree on everything. I this instance, yours is what matters since you created it and are keeping it because it has emotional value that speaks to your memories and heart. trackman
My two cents worth, I think the small hand does get lost in the grain. There is no way I would throw it away lol Charlie E
Charlie E
Obviously there are varying opions. No one is right or wrong. Personally I love a beautiful piece of wood much more than a piece of BB plywood. Doesn't make me right. I realize people are referring to the wood and not the cutting, still not sure there is a need to point out what you don't like about other peoples work. Still no hard feeling. Hudson River Rick
Charlie, you are 100% correct when it comes to opinion. I'm with you as far as using a beautiful piece of wood. I saw your great cutting before I noticed the grain of the wood. I think using boring baltic birch plywood for this image would be like taking a shower with a raincoat on...but then again, that's only my opinion.
