Artemisblossom
I recently noticed that the company I order my B B plywood from has hardwood plywood with an MDF core. I am fairly new to scrolling and obviously have much to learn. Would this type of plywood work good for portraits or should i just stick to the BB plywood ? lawson56
oldhudson
I've only used mdf core plywood for cabinet work e.g. the panels in a frame and panel construction. Because of all the dust created when sawing mdf, I'd avoid it for scroll work. Oscar Myer, OCtoolguy, JTTHECLOCKMAN and 1 other
lawson56
I agree.I have used MDF in the past didn't like all the dust.I would avoid it. I would stay with BB. Oscar Myer
dgman
Not only the dust issue, but the MDF core looks out of place especially if the panel is stained.
Rockytime
I wonder what veneers are available on that mdf. I think with dust collection and a dusk mask it would be workable. Does not Alex Fox use mdf or am I mistaken?
Artemisblossom
Thank you for all your answers. Rockytime it comes in Red Oak, Cherry, Maple, and Walnut.
Frank Pellow
Are you certain the the core is MDF and not real wood of some type? The material that I usually use for portraits is 1/4 inch thick with some type of wood sandwiched between thin quarter-sawn oak on one side and thin ash on the other side. It works great! Rockytime
I just purchased a 2X4 foot sheet of 1/4" plywood with a walnut surface. I did not look to see what the core was but rather I just liked the looks of it. I'll have to take a look tomorrow.

fredfret
I used MDF for portraits many times. I also use a respirator, dust collection and an overhead air purifier when cutting it.
stoney
The one issue I have found with MDF core plywood is when used for fine detail fretwork thin bridges are more fragile and easily broken than Baltic Birch. Dave, how did you do the black edge on your Arrowhead. Looks very impressive. Dave Monk
Puzzleguy
MDF has some binding materials -chemicals of unknown origin and composition i would not suggest its use -unless you have a very good respirator etc.( I wouldn't do it even with a respirator ) even when im cutting poplar and other woods - a mask is essential to your long term health - always !. Im not trying to scare you - I just want you around for a long time without serious health concerns . Peace ! Thanks Larry, I sprayed the backer with black lacquer and then glued the plywood on then sprayed the entire thing with clear.
