Popular Post RabidAlien
Another pattern from the library, posted by Grampa. Started cutting this one this past week, a couple of hours here and there in the evenings after work, and between honeydoo's on the weekend (wife went to bed early last night, so yeah, I was out in the garage after midnight, until I couldn't see which blurry hole I was threading the blade through). 3/8" BB ply, I think these were left over from the multi-layered dragon project I did before Christmas. Regardless, the pieces were big enough that I didn't need to cut them down any. Love it when stuff works out like that!!! All stains are Minwax: backer is "Ebony", eyes are "classic grey" and tiger is "gunstock". Frame (yay.) comes tomorrow. RabidAlien
Forgot to add, used nothing but spiral blades on this project. FD 3/0 and 2/0 blades. Lost count of how many snapped or hockey-sticked. When the blade gets that kink in the top of it, does anyone else just turn the blade around and clamp it in the other direction the next time? Or is it just me? ....or am I violating some law of the universe by doing that? My bad, if so. amazingkevin

I find if I pay attention when I clamp the blade I can feel whether it is flat in the holder or sort of sideways and I adjust it. Ones it is hockey sticked I feel like I'm living on borrowed time. Really nice cut though. I am going through a 3/8" BB faze myself. Bought a full sheet because I like the look of the thicker pieces. I prefer darker stains, like Honey, Provincial, or even Ebony. But it just seemed perfect for this one!

Scrappile
Kirk, nice cutting and I really like the way you finished it off. Those eyes really stare at you! You talk spirals, I assume you are using Flying Dutchman in both sizes. I may be wrong of coarse, but I used the 3/0 and 2/0 FDs for a long time. I really didn't care for the difference in size between the two and used the bigger 2/0 only when I had to. Then I purchased some Pegas 2/0 to try and I really like them. They appear to be a size in between the FD 3/0 and 2/0. Now I use them whenever I need a spiral blade and use the FD 3/0 only when cutting vains or just need a really small spiral... That has been my experience, just putting it out there. RabidAlien
RabidAlien
Yep, my spirals are all FD blades. When I first ordered them, I got the multi-pack with a dozen each 3/0, 2/0/, 1, 3, and 5's. I couldn't find any Pegas spiral multipacks in stock to get me started. I've used both brands for straight blades, but find that I personally prefer Pegas blades over FD. Maybe I'll start working down my stock of FD spirals and see about some Pegas when its time to replace them.
spirithorse
Very nice! That sure looks like a lot of entry holes! I admire scrollers that can use spiral blades. Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse RabidAlien

But the nose area took me several hours to cut, and most of those holes were less cutting and more "shaving" the wood away from the edge of the hole. I was a bit leery of spirals before this, but they sure do come in handy in a pattern like this, and you get PLENTY of practice using them!! Dragonkort
Love it!! and yes I turn the blade to or if its not to lone i'll snip off the top and just move the blade up some. Theres usuly enough blade left before I reach the teeth to this at least once. RabidAlien
