Finish on a childs puzzle??

What kind of finish wood you put on a puzzle for a child.

I am making some puzzles out of popular and I was wondering what a safe finish would be.

food coloring is about as safe as you can get maybe.

A popular combo, especially in the Etsy crowd, is water colors that have natural pigment. Then sealed with a beeswax/jojoba oil.
