new2woodwrk
I could have sworn I saw someone here who had used cd's or dvd's as material for a pattern but can't find it using the search. Does anyone remember seeing that and if so have a link? I have a huge stack of old cd's I want to cut to something and am looking for ideas. Thanks as always in advance OCtoolguy
kmmcrafts
I don't recall that on here... but several years ago there was a topic in one of the magazines.. They made Christmas ornament snow flakes out of old cd's It was a while ago because I think it was before DVD's came out.. spirithorse
Greetings, Here is a strange article and strange project I found while searching for your request. https://mathcraft.wonderhowto.com/how-to/make-two-circle-wobbler-from-cds-0130738/ I cut some snowflakes and gave them away a LONG time ago. I think I used old CD's and when I tried old DVD's they just separated like there were several layers to the DVD. Good luck and God Bless! spirithorse
Just another use for the old CD's . I made little centerpieces for my daughter's wedding and glued the wooden centerpieces to old CD's which sort of acted like mirrors and lots of prism or holographic effects. They were all taken home by guests so, they were well accepted. Some of the guest asked for them while some just disappeared into purses. LOL God Bless! ScollSaw Slasher
Well that hole in the middle is certainly a fly in the ointment. But I would just grab one, grab 2/0 blade and make a few test cuts to even see if it's a viable material. Who knows?? new2woodwrk
Bill WIlson
I vaguely recall a fellow who did cuttings from old vinyl records. Don't remember if it was on this forum or another one. new2woodwrk
teachnlearn
As a side business my wife cleans and restores DVDs, CDs and Game disks. We have a industrial machine that does it automatically. We have to post a warning that some disks have a very light coating glued to plastic. We haven't been able to determine which but 'metal coating' flakes off leaving clear plastic. Its going to be random. You may have repeated great results and at times the 'metal shine' will come right off. One disk had the layer laying in the machine and we were able to glue the entire sheet on. Rest of the time we have had disks that have patches missing. Our machine is a closed computer controlled system that buffs the scratches out. It takes just enough off to recover scratched disks. Even with computer control some disks have flaked. If you have a group of cheap disks to play with you can play with them, but if you want to use them continually your going to get the top coming off and leaving clear plastic. Roberta Moreton
I have done it with varying degrees of success. They have layers and that presents some issues. They are brittle. I’ll take a picture. I resized some snowflake patterns. new2woodwrk
teachnlearn
I think you would be better off gluing a metal leaf sheet to plywood and cutting, or gold or silver leaf gluing after the pattern is cut. You can get a constant thickness and inure the metal stays. teachnlearn
Just be careful of any old material. and wear a dust mask and vent. Asbestos was put in everything for years. Other old material have solvents and materials declared cancer causing. Restoring and refurbishing can be cheap and fun, but old materials will by pass manufacturing standards of today. I owned a commercial printing plant for 30 years and had a great art department which used things from Dick Blick often. They have been around for over 50 years. Amazing! BTW, sorry for hi-jacking the thread. new2woodwrk

Metal dust usually aluminum, but other metals are used. I don't want metal dust floating around anywhere. I have open motors in my shop and electronics. Tiny bits of metal so small you can't see them can cause malfunctions. Health, no matter how good your dust collection, you can't get it all. I don't want to breathe metal, polycarbonate, and dust from whatever they happen to decide makes a good label. CDs & DVDs have BPA in polycarbonate. Dealing with wood dust is bad enough. I got all this from searching for "What are compact discs made of?" on Google. I should have posted that instead of the link. new2woodwrk
