Well, just to see what the difference would be I did another 'cat' on my scrollsaw to compare it to the one I did with the router. Now bearing in mind this is only the second time I've used the router and the first time I've tried something this intricate I don't think it turned out. too badly. The wood quality is vastly different because of my 'mishap' with sanding the routered piece.      My first love is my scrollsaw that's for sure but I think I'll keep doing stuff with the router as I find it quite fascinating to see what can be done with it.

Just curious--do you mean the high speed smaller hand held tool(like a Dremel-etc.) when you referred to router, or an actual router?

Either way though you did very nice work.

I like them both. The scrolled one looks a bit crisper and perhaps slightly more detailed. Which one cut faster? Am I correct in assuming using the router would allow for much larger pieces than a scroll saw?

 

Does the noise of the router make your neighbors wonder if you've taken up Dentistry??

I'll try and answer all your questions.  It's a 'normal' router that I've fitted with a small clear plastic base.  @Wilson142  Mike I'm lucky enough to live in a house with no neighbours so noise is not an issue.   Yes the first piece I did was very big and I couldn't have done it on a scrollsaw.  I use cnc bits in the router which makes for quite fine lines when I cut. I use a reducing collet with the router to accommodate the size of the bit.  After trying both types of cutting I think that the router is really well suited to 'bigger' pieces although I've just remembered that I have done  a smaller piece before but the 'cat' was the most intricate that I've tried.

Nice work I love them, I messed about with a router I bought, as ppl said the noise was a bit much for my neighbours at 4am I love both pieces but the sharpness of the scroll saw is magic well done, love the picture you chose to cut

Thanks Gordon. I agree, there's nothing like a scrollsaw for doing the pieces I love to do and it will always be my first love.

I am so, so fortunate not to have any neighbours and the dogs don't seem to mind the noise. 

I must admit it's a bit of a 'pain' to start a router project.  I use transfer paper and draw each pattern on to the wood. Then I have to set up a 'work area' on one of Tony's benches, get out the box fan so that I don't get covered in dust,  put on ear defenders and face mask, find the router and then start cutting . But that said, I'm glad that I found this 'different' art form as I quite like it.

Aww. thank you Marg.  I must admit it doesn't feel like I've been doing this for a year and a half. I've had such fun with this new hobby of mine that time has just flown by.  I've tried several 'different' things with wood, some I liked, some not so much. I tried 'whittling' for a little while as that too fascinated me, alas, my hands wouldn't take to it and after trying a couple of times and ending up with my hands the size of pumpkins, I took natures 'hint' and stopped pursuing that particular hobby.
