new2woodwrk
I've been experimenting with food coloring and colored dyes lately for puzzle pieces. However, I notice before applying Shellac the color comes off onto my fingers. It mostly happens with the dye I'm using as example: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01ETT4FOO/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thoughts? Thanks as always in advance. puzzleman
applying shellac by hand is a problem. Try rattle can shellac and don't touch until completely dry. I use Sherwin Williams Chem Aqua Plus lacquer via air spry gun and don't touch the pieces until dry. I lay the puzzle pieces on bump-ons in a strip of wood 3" x 4'. The piece of wood rests on a lazy susan device so it can be rotated with ease to coat all ends and a surface. After the initial coat is dry, I will flip the pieces and recoat the edges and the uncoated surface. I do all of this outside on a deck. Unfortunately the Sherwin Williams product only comes in a gallon - no rattle cans. You might consider a water based sealant made by Deft that comes in a rattle can. https://www.amazon.com/Deft-Interior-Water-Based-11-25-Ounce-Aerosol/dp/B0017OKFQ2 bb Edited March 21, 2020 by puzzleman clarification new2woodwrk

teachnlearn
I wonder, rather then fighting the dye coming off, mix it with the shellac or what your applying. Could be mixed in small batches if the shellac comes in large cans. RJF new2woodwrk
Denny Knappen
I don’t use any dyes, but I use Samen Stains. Many times I want a color backer and used Samen Stain. new2woodwrk

You may not be letting the dye get dry enough before you touch it when you get it ready for the shellac. Maybe use the rubber gloves when you touch the pieces. Maybe you need to rub the pieces down with a rag to remove any residue that is there? Larry new2woodwrk
