Dust Collection Again

Rockytime

Recommended Posts

I like the idea of the hose from a cpap machine.  I have wanted to try to get an upper hose on my new dust collection system.  Of course with the lock down, I don't think I need to run to the hardware store to get a "y" connector hose.  It can wait until the fall.

I just got the plastic one of those last week and am still figuring out how I want to set it up.  I am going to make a new stand for my saw and want to incorporate it into the stand.  Looks like you have a good set up there.

Tom

That's what I'm goimg to do too. I bought the little Metro Vac and the cyclone that Les mentioned. I'm going to tuck the whole thing up under my saw so it will be totally self-contained.

Under no circumstance would I cut MDF because of the dust. However today I tried cutting Bagetta's  floating bears puzzle from 3/4" MDF. I am totally impressed with the little cyclone. It is hyper efficient. There was not even the odor of MDF. However, my olfactory sense is not great. I've been using the cyclone for a couple of weeks. I removed the vacuum filter which was new and there was no sawdust in it whatsoever. While cutting I could see the sawdust flying over to the pickup tube. It was kinda cool to see. I'm anxious to get the plastic cyclone for my other saw. The space saving is significant.

Ray, I've got the Metro vac also, and really like it.  Just a little loud, but not as bad as a shop vac.  I also have a fein vacuum, and may try to get that hooked up later.

Tom

I tried an experiment with a Tropical orange juice bottle. Take the cap off and cut a hole in the bottom to match the outlet of the vac. The bottom of the bottle has a concave that matches the convex of the vac. Hot glue that to the vac. It will cut the noise more than half and not bother the air flow. You'll be amazed how quiet it will be.

Hi Ray. do you have links to the miniature dust collector and the Metro vac. I would like to check them out

Thanks

grizz

The MetroVac is on eBay. Just do a search and look for the best price. The cyclone is on Amazon. Here are the two links.

cpap hose is here:

For the Tropical orange juice bottle, you'll have to scour your neighbors trash.

Hey Thanks Ray I appreciate it.

I just went to that link on eBay and bought one for $44.99 plus tax. Free shipping. I have no idea what I'm going to do with the accessories that come with it. Now I have two sets. I'm going to order the cyclone too. I've been waiting for the credit card to clear. End of month. By using PayPal credit, I get an extra month with no interest. Now all I need is another cpap hose.

Okay does the dust collector go in a bucket or something or is it self contained and just attach the hoses to the vac.  It looks like something that would set under my saw. I have the Dustopper but it is large and bulky. It works okay though.

The cyclone goes into a sealed container. It can be anything. My next one will be stuck in a coffee can because it has a sealed plastic lid. Reinforce the thin plastic lid with a couple of plywood discs, cut a hole in the top to insert the cyclone. Cheap and easy.

Thanks Les that's what I needed to know. Sounds pretty easy and simple, even for me.

There is a neat metal container on Amazon. I bought the small one but I wish I had bought the big one. Mine will work but it doesn't allow for the lid/cyclone to tilt out completely. My design flaw. Didn't plan ahead.

Ray you have this system set up and running in your shop?

Not yet. I wanted to finish up what I'm working on first. I am going to have to take my saw apart to do what I want to do so I've put it off. I have everything I need to do it and have hooked it up to try it. It works great as Les stated. I'm excited at the prospect of having two Excalibur saws on mobile stands that will each have their own self-contained dust control systems. The tiny little cyclone really does work and that MicroVac is very strong for its size. As stated, it's a bit noisy and that's why I configured that "muffler" for it.
