If you're using a backer 1/8 if not 1/4. Do you have a need/use for more than two copies. I usually cut 3 if using 1/8 just a habit gives a little more support.

Not really a need or use, more of a "If I'm going to cut something like this, I want to maximize my output and get as many as possible out of it."

That way, I have for gifts and samples etc.

Both would get a backer and frame

I cut everything from 1/8" and stack cut between 4-6 at a time.. Of coarse I'm a seller so the more I do in one cutting helps keep the price down.. Only 1/4" I use is backers for the most part... That said.. most backers are a contrasting ( usually walnut ) 1/4"  plywood material... not much for BB backers and stained.. I guess that method doesn't float my boat... but to each their own..

I use both.   Has to do with type of picture and size.  Lot of fine veining, I like to use 1/8" because thicker and the veining will not show up.  I erred on my last picture, well didn't err, I didn't have a piece of 1/8" so I used 1/4".  As you can see the detail of the picture does not show up like it would have had I used 1/8".  On bigger detailed pictures it may not matter as much.
