Birchbark
I got some lumber yesterday, now i just hope some of it can be saved. The owners said they thought it was Ash.... or.. maybe Hickory. lol. Whatever it is, looks pretty rough. I'll dig down and run a few through the planer and see what comes out. Worth looking into IMO. dgman
It looks real rough Russell! I hope you have a hand held metal detector. If you have a drum sander, I would use that to clean up the boards first before running through the planner. You should be able to recover a lot of good wood there, good luck! Denny Knappen
Yes, Russell, that is quite a pile of wood. I hope you get some nice pieces out of that pile. Birchbark and OCtoolguy 1
kmmcrafts
my brother gave me a pile about two times that size of walnut.. customer brought in the logs and had him custom saw it.. he paid my brother for cutting it and everything... that was about 15 years ago.. he never come picked it up.. my brother tried many times to get in contact with the customer.. He told me I could have it if I haul it out of there and out of his way.. Same thing with a pile about half that size with Maple... I've gotten a lot of good lumber salvaged from those piles.. and still haven't put a dent in them yet.. LOL I do wish I had a drum sander... I learned quick to run old planer knives for the first couple passes of this... a lot of dirt and grit and get into the wood pores from years of sitting.. Needles to say... I have a brand new set of worn planer knives, Edited April 7, 2020 by kmmcrafts OCtoolguy
Crosstimbers
My son repairs and installs copiers. Some of those big machines come in wood crates that have some fairly decent wood like oak, hickory and ash. There's also a lot that isn't fit to use, but that's to be expected. I don't have a drum sander, so before I run it through my planer, I strap my hand-held belt sander upside down on a saw horse to clean it up. It's a lot of work but it's worth the effort for the really good stuff that's free. Birchbark and OCtoolguy 1
Puzzleguy
I had a friend who gave me a pile of wood looked a bit like this - mine was mahogany scraps some people can take stuff like so called barn wood - and make country crafts out of it , I knew a gent who made flying geese as wall hangings -he made a decent living at it- they sold well - I think you have a diamond in the rough !
