Popular Post Dave Monk Posted April 11, 2020 Popular Post Report Posted April 11, 2020 I use a lot of 1/2" baltic birch for backers and end up with a lot of scrap that I throw away which drives me crazy. Decided to do something different. don watson, meflick, Foxfold and 17 others 20 Quote

spirithorse Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Great work, Dave! What are the dimensions, please? I was a bit surprised that you use 1/2" for backers. I think most people use 1/4" That is very, very nice! God Bless! Spirithorse Dave Monk 1 Quote

I back most of my appliqued plaques like the one I show here with 1/2" I never have to worry about nailing hangers on them. munzieb 1 Quote
Gordster Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Great project Dave...good idea for 1/2 inch for backer. I use 3/8th inch screws on the hangers and sometimes I have to lower the hanger to get a place where it hits both backer and top.half inch is a good answer. Dave Monk 1 Quote
spirithorse Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Wow, that's another fantastic project, Dave! God Bless! Spirithorse Dave Monk 1 Quote

My supplier charges the same for 1/2" and 1/4". The 1/2" wouldn't work as well if you didn't let it hang over your top piece. Gordster 1 Quote

Yes,see what you mean...In these two pictures, the friends and coffee one is ok for the hanger but the Nannys one you have to find a place in center where screw won't come through, lots of extra measuring and sometimes, hanger has to go too low, so it's going to be half inch backers for this type.can judge that before hand..thanks for that tip...nd Happy Easter to you and Julie. Happy Easter to you and yours Gordi. Those are cool plaques. Nice job! When I use oak for my scrolling and also like to stain the backer. Quote
Gonzo Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 (edited) Dave, how do you keep your backer from splotching when you stain it? Nice pieces by the way Edited April 12, 2020 by Gonzo Quote
Charlie E Posted April 12, 2020 Report Posted April 12, 2020 Great job Dave. Taking the sometimes less than desirable edge of plywood and making it into something beautiful is awesome. I love the hinge too. Dave Monk 1 Quote

Nice pieces by the way It can get a bit splotchy but you do not see large sections of it through the cuts. I always stain it dark. To me the edges don't even look bad once it is all finished. Quote
