ok I made all of my kids some christmass presents according to what they are interested in. When I asked my youngest daughter what she would like she said she wanted a D & D screen to put on the table to sort of hide her books and notes and such... my ex husband and I started playing D&D back in the late 70s when it first came out so of course my kids learned to play to.  now when they were younger I would make up D & D type games to go with there history lessons lol they had to really research the person they were playing and stick to the personaly of that person during the game.... it made the learning fun and entertaining lol  it wasn't until they were grown that they relized what I was doing lol then they accused me of being sneaky!!  lol can you immanage little old me being sneaky? lol any way my Heather now runs a D & D game of her own with her husband and there friends.... and as dungen master she wanted a screen... now I don't know where you could be buy such a thing and not having found any patterns on line for them I just sort of had to make my own patterns..... so what I did was grab 2 coloring book pictures that fit the D &D theam and another from a wood magazine I had and transferred the pictures to wood... then I took my trusty little dermal tool and bits... and sort of line carved and etched the pictures on to the wood... after those were finished I put a frame around each picture then put hinges on them so they would stand and be a screen.... then I wood burned the name of all Heathers direct relitives and all the pets name we ve had over the years in the bricks of the castle wall in the center frame.  im not to sure how well the pictures came out bu91022904_238343387557651_4511583546371997696_n.thumb.jpg.fcb32b6abd325df15e847dba4f05041c.jpg t here they are::::90916049_620967575350084_3793872147315687424_n.thumb.jpg.a0ba047c83ceefe6f228d3b0b0b3607e.jpg91404744_143353260411172_587178800240918528_n.thumb.jpg.557a86355de0b22b64a788c9e4e86deb.jpg90869045_880297965764453_8255097124832673792_n.thumb.jpg.885f70bb158104ee6b524fa511276555.jpg90795529_1386400331551837_2402042700321783808_n.thumb.jpg.631149cb1fe7c88f5bae99d7ee30836b.jpgthis is the center piece... its a dragon with wings sort of sitting in the door way of a castle... you can't really see it but those black little lines or squiggles... that s where i wood burned all the names in the bricks ... sometimes i make things a litte more complex then just simple projects lol everyone one whos seen it has asked if i could do another screen maybe with different picture and how much would i charge to make them..... so far iv been able to sort of stear them to other things.... because of course i could make others but i have no idea how much to charge for such a thing!! lol  i told my kids if they ever want to get a present for one of there friends to let me know and then i ll see what i can come up with for them... only thing is they wont be able to pick out the pictures they want done. lol i had thought about painting the pictures once they were done, but everyone told me NO !! lol to just leave it as it was so thats what i did. the only real problem i had with making this is that the 3 pannals wont fold down flat for carrying when going to some eles house or to be put away so i put little hook type things on the tops of the pictures so the screen can be hung on a wall and then taken down during game time. like i said i dont really know what kind of wood working you would call this but Heather liked it as did a lot of her frieds and thats all that really mattered to me. lol

thank you again every body.... now as far as a work of wounder lol I don't hardly think so lol geese!! now let me get off here so I can go play for a little while!!!  iv always said I might have to grow older but I simply refuse to grow up!!!  lol

Take a gander (har!!) at papercutting patterns.  Especially lightboxes, there are some AWESOME layered patterns out there, and since papercutting has to deal with the same laws of physics regarding islands as we do with scrolling, those patterns work wonderfully for scroll saws.  The only drawback is that some of the detail-work possible with a razor is simply too small for a blade, but those little details I just don't bother drilling out.  There's plenty more.  There's a lot of cool single-layer patterns with D&D-esque themes (pirates, Vikings/barbarians/samurai, dragons, etc) as well.  If you do a lightbox layered pattern, I would leave the large openings used for lights un-cut (leave em solid) and use the thinnest ply you can find so that the screen isn't too thick to pack up and carry (or instead of hinges screwed down, do a loose hinge, some-assembly-required, where the DM slots a dowel into holes and does a quick assembly on-site and just stores them stacked between sessions.

Here's a couple of ideas for papercutting patterns (I've done both lightboxes, they're possible on scrollsaw):

ROFL!!!  Editing to add this one....which would be PERFECT for a DM screen....:

oh I simply love that idea !! I saved the picture that shows the diagram for making the light box..... with spikes help im sure we could figure out how to do it!!  and I copyed the picture of the DM screen this is the closest iv ever gotten to making a layered pice. this was a picture I saw in a magazine. I showed it to ritia and asked her to help me make a patten from it Its a layered a piece but theres no cut out holes that would let the light shine through. Ritia helped me with the layering process to...showing me where to put each piece of the picture so it would look right.  I have trouble with depth perception so its hard for me to get this sort of thing right. I think what your talking about is a little bit different and easer. in this picture each piece is cut out and glued to the baker board to creat the picture. not sure if that's any kind of official wood workig thing lol but that's what I wanted to do so ritia fixed up the pattern for me. I think what your talking about is more like cutting several fret pieces out of thin wood and then layering them one on top of the other to show the depth and the light would shine through the holes where the fret work was cut out of eah piece?  then you would just buy a light kit of some k ind to fit your project and then light it up behind the entire finished picture ? I was not kidding when I told you people  I don't really know what im doing. lol  I try to figure out how things were put together mainly from the pictures.. I do read the directions and discripetion of apiece but for the most part  I look at the picture to see where everything goes and the before I glue the piece together I get some one who has depth perception to look at it and help me get the pieces placed right. now with this picture there were no directions because ritia and I made the pattern from a picture in a mag... lol might have been from one of those old D&Dmagizines the ex was always getting the mail... don't even know if there in busness any more. lol thanks for the wounderful idea!!!  hum wounder if I can find the pattern for this picture and figure out a way to make it into a light box? the same with heathers screen pictures...

oh if case your woundering the words at the bottom of picture says   sometimes the dragon wins lol and you cant really see if very good but the dragon is using whats left of the knights sword as a tooth pick and hes cleaning his teeth!!  all that other stuff on the ground are bits and pieces of his armor lol

LOve that pic!

And yes, the lightboxes are several layers (I think the one with the princess in the cave is 5 or 6 layers, the one with the flying dragon and castle is seven layers), most of the layers having a large opening at the bottom (hidden by the layers above it) that allow the light to pass through.  These are also intended to be cut from paper, most of which lets a small amount of light through on its own, or tends to "glow" when lit from behind.  Wood is....not as kind to light sources.  :)  So if I were to do this for a DM screen, I would forget about light sources and just do a solid backer, then figure out a way to hinge or connect the panels together so that they can be disconnected from each other and stacked for storage and transport.

I've included some pics from when I cut one of those patterns (stack cut, there are actually TWO finished projects in the pic with them all laid out).  I also cut a "spacer" piece to go between each layer, thinking it would help with lighting (it didn't) and depth (it did), but those make the project REALLY thick.  They're not necessary to use.

Three layers:

Five layers:

Seven layers:

Stained.  The spacers are nothing more than the border around one of the layers, everything in the middle removed.  I couldn't bother with these if I were to cut it again.

that is fantastic!!! hum wounder why I didn't think of doing something like my layered dragon project for the D&D screen... lol  most likely God watching over me so I wouldn't try to do to much as I eased my way back into doing the crafts !!! my only reget about that picture is that I didn't make 2 of them so I would have one to keep for me!! lol I was living in a small apartment at that time and had no place for things....living in a 2 bedroom house now and am already finding im running out of wall space to put the things I make that I want one of too!!! i'll have to search for that pattern again....I only made the one and it sold on ebay right away!!! don't remember how much itwent for but I got a lot of notices telling me I sold it for to little lol willhave to figure that out before I try selling things again.... hve to do some research to try to figure out where the best place to sell things would be too
