My Basket Weave

I just love this pattern from Steve as I used to make as the hostess gift till I ran out of friends.

I also made with one extra layer and a thicker top and bottom and divided the interior to make a pencil holder.  Used cheap pine and was a great gift.

Looks good Don.  Thanks for the ideas.

Tammi201 drew my attention to the Steve Good pattern for this basket in the thread:

that she posted yesterday.

I immediately made my version of the basket using Figured Maple for the sides and Walnut for the top and bottom.

As Tammi said in her thread this is surprisingly easy to make.  The only difficult part, for me. was gluing everything together.

Wow I love it. The colors are beautiful together.  I’m going to make another one soon. The place I buy my wood is still closed due to the stay home order.   😁

Awesome, what a great idea. Everyone can use a pencil holder. This is beautiful. The grain in the wood makes it look like fabric.

Both Tammi and Frank, you have cut the same basket and with great finishes using stain and natural woods! Very nicely done! I have cut different styles of the basket patterns from Steve and as stated very easy to do! With that said at one craft show I had some of them displayed and one customer was looking at one and ask how I bent the wood in order to put the dowels in! I presided to explain to him that they were cut using a scroll saw and the "dowel" is just part of the basket weave! The person still maintained that I had in some way bent the wood and inserted the dowel! I never did convince him that each weave is cut using a scroll saw! I now leave one of the weaves just a hair off center to show a customer that it is indeed one piece, "dowel" and weave!

I experienced the same problem explaining this to my daughter after I gave her the box.  For quite a while, she insisted that the basket had been woven.  On the other hand, my grandson (her son) knew immediately what I had done even before I explained the "trick".
