It has been a disappointing time for me

I started out to make this little intartia bear because I thought it had so much meaning and was so nicely designed by JGR. I just had to give it a try. Overall, I thought it was going pretty well until It was time to do the lettering on the medicine bottle. I had given it some thought and figured it was too delicate of letter cutting and so I decided  I would just write in on with a small sharpie. I had one chance to get it right, as it was already glued in place. Well quickly I found out it was a big mistake and it ended up taking so much away from the piece.  As you can see, the ink in the sharpie absorbed into the grain of the wood and resulted in a really bad case of the ink running into the pours of the wood. That was the start of my frustrations and disappointments for the past couple of weeks. I will post the new piece of bad failures for me in a couple of days, when I  go ahead and post my most frustrating piece, ( for me ), I have ever made.

I really like it, I don’t think it’s a failure at all. Very beautiful

Dick, it looks alright to me, but, if it doesn't in yours it is an easy fix. If it was a piece that I did, I would just scroll it out of there on my saw. And if I didn't fix it that way, there's two types of fixes I can still think of. Another way to fix it, would be to use a router and router it down below the surface, and put a new piece in there to it the way you want it too. But before putting the new piece in place, do the printing and finish work on it. Good luck.

P.S. Before I ever do any printing or markings on a piece of wood, I always coat the piece with shellac or thinned Varathane. Then, if I make an error when printing, it doesn't ruin the piece because the mistake or error can be removed.

i must say i agree with everyone else it looks great to me!! and as was already said we can be our worse cirtics... but if its not up to snuff to you you can try to fix it or you could give it to good will or hospic where people who cant afford to buy things like that could get it at a much lower price... just a thought for what its worth.

Looks great to me Dick. We tend to be our worst critics.  Sometimes I use an incident like that as a challenge.  If it really bugged me bad I would be tempted to cut it out and put a new one in. Of coarse I would probably screw it up worse.

Dave, I have yet to see you screw  up anything. Your work is so dang  nice. I am so proud of how much you have accomplished. You are so careful with what you do and never seem to make a mistake. I always look at your work in awe

Nice tip. I will keep that in mind.

Dick I think it is great just as it is, You did a fine job.If you think it's not right look at it as an opportunity to get yourself a little lazer engraver to do your writing. See, there is always an excuse for a new tool. LOL!

 Karl

Don't think I could afford a lazer engraver. I think they are a little to spendy for me to justify

Dick, Dick, Dick, Dick ......

Can't think of any project I have ever made that I haven't screwed up on the first one - meaning its the one that can be given away - then keep the second - and sell the rest ..... but ..... I'm one of those that rarely makes a project twice ..... meaning ..... I have a heck of a lot of mistakes out there ....

Having said all this - I think one fix you might want to try is to maybe seal the entire piece with your first coat of finish .... do a light sanding ..... then  add the sharpie lettering - and complete your finish.

Have to tell you - that is more than a great looking piece - you don't have anything to feel bad about.

The bear and the idea are excellent.  Is it possible that now you have applied finish to it, that with the aid of a ruler you could neaten up the letters with the sharpie?  Just a thought.

I don't see how it can be done, but I may try to cut out the jar and figure something out from there or print a paper label for the piece and clue it in place and then put a layer of finish over it.

Dick you must be a perfectionist, not too many can be in the club, stop feeling sorry you did a magnificent job, I will be proud to own your bear.

That is so nice of you to say that..... The best part of The Village is how everyone is always to encouraging and not working on putting anyone down. It really helps
