This is very interesting, I watched a few years back about doing this with regular paper but the process of getting the paper wet but not too wet and all the rubbing involved to separate the paper made me loose interest in a project I've been wanting to try.. I've got a inkjet printer but I'm going to give this a try..

To all who are still living with "inkjet", I too messed around for years with the inkjets/cartridges/lost connections etc. I spent many times the cost of a low end laser printer. Finally, I had had enough and went online to Amazon. I did my homework and came up with a Brother # MFC-9130CW.I'm not sure it's still available but whatever replaced it would not be that much different. If I recall, I got it on sale for just over $200. I'm still running on the cartridges that came with it. I did buy another black cartridge because most of what I do is in black but I still have it unopened in my desk drawer. Do yourselves a favor and investigate what is out there now and not all that expensive. I've not had one tiny bit of trouble with this printer on any front. The wireless connectivity has not let me down once. Granted, it's sitting on my desk not far from the PC or router. That didn't happen with my inkjets. They were always losing the signal. And I tried every brand. Think about it. Life is too short to spend it messing with a printer that is junk when you buy it. Even the expensive ones are built to fail. They make all their money on the ink.

I do agree with that.. I bought a thermal printer to do shipping labels because of the inkjet ink prices and then the hassle of fighting with paper jams etc.. But I still use my Epson 7610 for printing patterns, and customer receipts etc.. I've not had much issues with inkjet like many do.. but I also believe it to be because I use it.. ALOT.. The biggest issues with printers is the ink gets dried up in the print head because of lack of use.. I print several papers a day.. either receipts or patterns.. I do use a bit of ink.. replace the the black with the XL series about every 2 -3 months maybe.. or about 4 times a year.. used to be about 6 times until I got the label printer.. now NO ink for labels..

I'll bet the laser printers are pricey for the wide format.. One I have was not a cheap one either.. but it was the new kid on the block so I did pay a premium because of that.. Think I have around $350 is for mine.. I bet it's down to $130 now that it's been out for a few years, lol

My next printer will be laser though.. always wanted to try one..

After I posted my soapbox issue, I went to Amazon to see what is available. They are not on sale right now. But also, if you are only going to print patterns or receipts, a monochrome b/w one at $100 ain't bad. The cartridges never go bad from what I have been told. You might have to shake them every once in a while. I haven't had to do that. I got the low ink message a couple of time on the black one but there is a way to "fool" the printer into thinking it has a new cartridge. I love YouTube.

I do just enough color that I feel I would need a color.. and if this transfer deal like the video of this topic showed i could see me doing quite a lot with that.. I've had a idea bouncing around my brain a few years with doing this transfer type stuff to wood.. The one you mentioned I looked up.. I won't be paying no grand for a printer.. I doubt I've even used a grand worth of ink through my inkjet printer in all the years I've used it.. including the price I paid for my printer, LOL.. But not to say I wouldn't buy it on sale or a refurbished one.. for a few hundred less.. I'll keep my eye open for some refurbished, or sales.. even maybe used..

Yeah, I saw that too. My printer is discontinued. Someone is trying to make a hefty profit off of his. I found my receipt. I paid $230 plus tax. It's a great printer.

I have both laser and inkjet. I rarely use the inkjet printer. it's slow and it sits a long time there always seems to be an issue with the ink cartridges. It has no network connection. The laser is color, prints faster, has wired and wireless network connections, and costs under $200. Inkjets print better photos, but a few years ago I did the math and it was cheaper per photo to have the photo printed at CVS. Up load, wait for an email, and pick it up when the wife does her milk run. I factored in the cost of ink, photo paper, and the fact that some times I need to print the photo more than once because of operator errors, printer errors, ink cartridges, and the cost of the printer.

I don't know why I still keep the inkjet.

Ditched my inkjet a few years back. The cost of the ink was as much as an entire new printer that came with ink.  I would just toss the whole thing when the ink ran dry.  Just didnt sit right doing that but neither did paying more for ink than an entire new unit. 

Went color laser and paid under $200 for it. Came with all the color toners too so printed probably 400-500 pages just with the ones it came with. I buy the off brand toners on amazon that are about $40 for all the colors and 2 blacks. They last forever or so it seems. It voids the warranty they say but I have never used a warranty anyway so no biog deal. 

When i lay my stuff out it is always multiple pages. I have no thoughts at all of printing 10 pages just to look at it and then printing it again after a slight tweak to the size.  

Plus it is wireless and I can even print from my phone if I want to. 

I am not printing photos and the like, just my patterns and such. Printed some labels the other day so will try this trick next time I print one. 

It is the Brother HL-3170 cdw.

You do know that when you get the "low toner" message you can do a reset and get more out of the cartridge before tossing it. Do a Youtube on your model printer. It's really easy.

Been selling some stuff on ebay recently so have some labels I printed.

Tried this method today.  I have to say it almost ruined my Brother laser printer. 

It didnt anything on the backing so i tried just regular printing and it ended up getting clogged. 

Melted some paper to in internal spongy spindle thing that is about 200 degrees.  had to cut it off with a razor blade, took me about 45 minutes to remove the melted pieces. 

maybe its my printer or backing stuff but this was a complete failure.
