It works very well and takes so little space. I use a 3 lb coffee can. That is about as cheap as one can get. Er... I should perhaps say inexpensive. I'm almost done with my new stand and it will have a self-contained vac w/muffler and the tiny little cyclone in a 2 lb. coffee cannister. Ordered the Metro Vac on Ebay and the cyclone on Amazon. The vacuum is here but still waiting for the cyclone. I'm planning on using a paint can for the canister, if it'll be tall enough. The little cyclone dust collector is available from Amazon for about $11 if I remember correctly. On Amazon just search miniature cyclone dust collector. You may have to go down quite far on the list before you run into it. I'll try ti find it and post the url. I just mounted it in a three lb. coffee tin. It works well because the plastic lid seals well. I sandwich the plastic lid between two thin plywood disks for rigidity. The hoses are from a cpap machine. They are available on Amazon cheap. I can't find one.. I've ordered a couple different ones and each one was full of a ground up substance.. It smelled a lot like a cup of coffee but it's not.. it's like dried up coffee or something.. been nice if it had been an actual big can of coffee that I could drink.. I filed a complaint with the seller that the coffee can was filled with dried up coffee.. I had to throw it out.. shame too cause it smelled so good.. but gosh you sure can't drink it..I tried a spoon full and it sure is some nasty tasting stuff.. Smells great though.. I kept the one can and just left it open to make the shop smell good.. critters got into it and now I can't even shoot them.. they run about 2-3 times faster after eating it.. been thinkin maybe I should eat some..maybe I can saw faster and be more productive.. Rockytime Posted June 5, 2020 Author Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 My coffee can is an old Folgers can I had in the shop. I don't drink coffee and my wife just buys these fancy little buggers. A coffee can should not be too hard to find. Any container with a tight fitting lid will work. The stand I have had for a lot of years, and is on casters to roll around where I want to use it. The vac is a Metro Vac 'n blo, with a plastic bottle to act as a muffler. It is connected to the mini cyclone, which is fitted to a 6" pvc pipe I liberated from a construction job a long time ago. Turned a bottom for it on the lathe, and used a pvc cap for the top. This is all connected to a scrollnado dust collector. I have been sawing on mdf lately and this really catches a lot of the dust from that, so I know it will do a great job on wood and plywood. Tom I'd like to see some more detain on the "muffler" bottle thing.. on the vac.. what did you do just drill a bunch of holes in the bottle? I really like the compactness of the Metro vac but I've been hesitant to buy one because I've read they are louder than expected.. I think it was Ray that did something to one to make it quieter.. I've gone into production mode the last few weeks trying to bring up some new items to my inventory.. and on top of trying to keep up on orders coming in.. I've spent a lot of time behind my saw lately.. The dust that comes off the excalibur is crazy bad landing in my lap, on my legs, and even on my shoes and socks.. I don't have this problem on the Hawk saws.. but it'd be nice to have it all cleaned up as I'm cutting.. Dust collection at the saw has been on my to do list for a couple years now.. jollyred Posted June 5, 2020 Report Share Posted June 5, 2020 All I did to the bottle is cut a hole in the bottom to fit over the output side of the vac. Then I used hot melt glue to attach it to the vac. I measured the decibels on the vac before and after, and got a drop of 8 decibels, which is supposed to be a drop of half the volume. The decibels were read on an app on my phone, so don't know how precise they are. This was suggested to me by Ray, and it works. You lucked out. When I tried to order a second one they were out of stock for a long while. Now they are back at $40. Dont know what happened.
