Travis
I wanted to gauge interest in a possible forum-based pattern making class. The class would be free (naturally) and operate much the same way an internet class would. The class would run twice a week for about 4 weeks or so. Each lesson would build upon the next. We'll have a class assignment that we all work on, then the final would be your own creation to show off your new skills. Each lesson would have a video demonstration as well as written instructions plus any project files. We'd have a separate forum with a thread for each lesson so you can ask questions and get problems troubleshooted. We'd also use a freeware program (GIMP, Inkscape and Paint.net) so you don't have to shell out any money. Would this be of interest to you? Would you participate (I don't want to teach to an empty classroom )? Tell me what you think!

scrollsaw22
Me too! Definitely...have wanted to do this aspect also.
Messman
Even though I already make patterns this sounds like it would be good. I might learn a couple of things myself and pass on a little help to others as well. You can count me in as a student and as an instructors helper if needed. joleet
Travis I'm sure planning on it. My program is Adobe Elements and Inkscape. Will these work??? Ron T.
Travis
Thanks all for the response. I'm still working it out in my head how it will work, but there seems to be some interest in going forward with the class. The first class will most likely be a portrait class. We'll be using GIMP exclusively since it is free and easy to get. It works on Mac and PC. This way we can all be on the same page if problems arise. Hopefully there is additional interest from other users. If so, chime in here and let me know you're interested. That way I can plan accordingly. The more the merrier. Travis
One thing I'd like to point out, even though this class will be using GIMP as the graphics program, the techniques easily apply to any bitmap based program (like photo paint or Photoshop). Most bitmap graphics programs operate pretty much the same way. The only difference is the buttons might be in a different location. I certainly didn't want to exclude those who use a different program. You'll still learn something from the GIMP class that you can later take back to your preferred program. mouchedog
I'm definitely interested although I will be gone most of June, so hopefully the information will be available later on as well. mouchedog
joscrolls
I'd very much be interested; I use inkscape just to "finish" off most of my patterns, but I can see there's a lot more to the program. I found your videos very helpful Travis, thanks for sharing those-I didn't realize you could change the outline and the interior color in such an easy step. Count me in! Christina
I've been trying to learn GIMP myself......not doing too hot at it though lol. I'd be interested in your class too Travis. Looks like you'll have a full class! Christina
Travis
OK. I think I have this worked out in my head now...LOL. I have a roughed out syllabus which I think might work. Here's the trick. I want to combine Scroll Saw Goodies podcast with the forum-based class. I'll be offering the videos on SSG as well as in the forums. The forums will be the only place to find things like written instructions, self-quizzes, source files, and Q&A. This will also be the place to get feedback on a personal/final project. The class will be structured by having lessons tackle specific aspects and each forum thread will talk about only that lesson. But as far as participation, that will be somewhat open-ended. Basically, if someone learns of the classes 2 weeks in, or even 1 year after the fact, they can still participate. With that said, it might be better to follow along with the class as its happening. That way an active discussion could help answer questions, troubleshoot problems, or maybe even come up with different techniques. So here's the run-down. The class will start on May 4th. It will run 6 weeks, with 2 lessons each week (Tuesday and Thursday). We'll be all working off the same picture. It will be a portrait that starts off as a color photo. Since it is a portrait, and I wanted to do a celebrity, and the class runs 6 weeks, I decided to call this class: 6 Weeks of Kevin Bacon LOL...I find that really amusing. Does anybody get that reference? Or am I the only one?
blame
lol guess i'm slow today cuz i dont get it but a suggestion for your class maybe you could add a dedicated forum for called The Workshop . blame

Christina
LOL I'm sorry Travis I guess I'm a bit on the slow side too............I don't get it either. But your class sounds great and I look forward to it. Christina
Messman
As long as we dont get 6 degrees of the course and return to Kevin Bacon....I will be ok I got the reference can you tell Travis Chris
Travis
There is a trivia game (often played with booze) called Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. The premise is that every actor can be linked to Kevin Bacon in 6 steps or less. I'm horrible at the game, but my friends did really well with it. Which usually meant I was passed out on the floor before 11pm Ahhhh...the college days. Here's how it goes: Shirley Temple was in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm with Ada Lynn who was in JFK with Kevin Bacon Harold Lloyd was in Sin of Harold Diddlebock with Angelo Rossitto who was in Smokey Bites the Dust with Rance Howard who was in Frost/Nixon with Kevin Bacon Eminem was in 8 Mile with Eugene Byrd who was in Rails & Ties with Kevin Bacon André the Giant was in The Princess Bride with Christopher Guest was in A Few Good Men with Kevin Bacon
greasemonkeyredneck
I'd be very interested. I've spent countless hours trying to learn to turn portraits to patterns with only limited success. However, I have a question. For some, like me, it often becomes impossible for us to be online at any certain time. With that in mind, would the classes be in video post form so we can look at them later, or what? Another question, I keep hearing about the GIMP program. Even though I already have countless graphics programs, one more won't hurt, where can I get it? The videos will be posted in the forums as well as Scroll Saw Goodies. You can continue to ask questions in the forum long after the class is officially done and I'd be happy to answer (no surprise that I'm always on to answer questions ) But I think the real value would be to participate as the class is in progress. Open discussions and brainstorming ideas is where you can learn a lot. After the class is over, the participation and discussion might be significantly less. Gimp is a bitmap/raster graphics program. Like blame said, it's available at gimp.org. Another free program that's really nice is Inkscape. Inkscape is a free vector graphics program available at inkscape.org. greasemonkeyredneck
I've got inkscape, and I'll will download GIMP soon. I'm still learning on these graphics programs though. You have the class and I'll participate in any way I can. Also, I found the video I was looking for about printing larger than standard paper size patterns using inkscape. What a surprise who's video it was. Thank you for devoting so much of your time to computer illiterates like myself, Travis.
