Travis or someone HELP!!!

I have Adobe, but decided it would be best to download Gimp so I could follow along. This downloaded OK, BUT, it said to be sure to download the help segment, so I did. It went all thru the steps including the dialog box taking about 2 minutes to download and showing it being downloaded. IT'S NOT THERE!!!. Cant find it anywhere and when I open gimp and use help it says I dont have it and I need to go online for help. I then downloaded it again with no results :curse: What am I doing wrong????. It says to pick one of a choice of about 5, some say eng some say help. Thats what I say HELP!!!

....The class will start on May 4th. It will run 6 weeks, with 2 lessons each week (Tuesday and Thursday). We'll be all working off the same picture. It will be a portrait that starts off as a color photo. Since it is a portrait, and I wanted to do a celebrity, and the class runs 6 weeks....

Hi Ron,

I'm not quite sure what the problem would be. I'll give it a try when I get to work tomorrow and see what I can come up with. I normally use the online documentation (which seems to be down at the moment). But I usually find that to be the most up to date and easiest to get. But I'll fiddle around with the downloaded version in the AM and see what I can figure out.

One thing I could throw out for you. It is a bz2 file format. That is a type of file compression (the help files are 40+ megs, which is another reason I prefer online documentation). I think WinZip opens it up. But you can do a search for the bz2 file on your computer. I would think it would download to your desktop. But you can check your My Documents folder too.

Will the lessons be available any time or is it just on the days posted? The reason for asking is that I have little time for spending on the computer and it will more then likely take me longer then 6 weeks to complete. I aam working 9 to 10 hrs a day and it is difficult to find time to get online.

The lessons will be available all of the time, so you can work at your own pace.

Well, Ron, I've tried playing around with it. I didn't have any luck. I think the installation is intended for Unix users. It requires a lot of command line arguments, which is a bit beyond my skill. Unless someone else knows how to do it, I'm pretty much clueless. But don't worry. From what I can gather, the User Manual you downloaded is for version 2.4. The current version of GIMP is 2.6. I'd pretty much stick with the online version of the manual. It will more likely be up to date sooner than the downloaded version. Besides, the downloaded version is 40+ megs, which is a lot of space. I'd much rather use that to store patterns. ;) You can find the online version at http://docs.gimp.org/en/. I hope this helps.

I am definately interested in participating in this class as well. Pattern making is something I would definately like to learn.

Travis, you mentioned that the real value would be to participate as the class is in progress, I totally agree with you there but for me that would be hard to do as I am in a different time zone (Australian Central Standard Time). Would there be a way for me to view the discussion and ideas from the classes ?

Yup. There isn't a set time during the day. Mostly when I get around to posting it. ;) Everything will all take place in the forum, so discussion can happen for several days if not weeks. So time zone won't be a problem and still participate in the discussions.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a reminder, we start our online class next week! So keep an eye out for it. I'll have a subforum in the Pattern Maker's Lounge and I'll also have a banner on the top of the screen that will link to the 'classroom'. Be sure to spread the word to others that may be interested in learning how to make a scroll saw portrait pattern using GIMP. More the merrier!
