I have been using the tightbond Hide glue recently on projects where I needed a longer open time.  I have not done any frames with it.

G'day Rolf, When I started my apprenticeship we still used animal glue. Had it in an electric pot which we used to fill with pellets of glue. I don't know if it was any better than PVA, but it wasn't any worse just a lot more mucking about. The beauty with it was, that if a piece needed repairs, and I mean an OLD piece you could heat the joint and pop it apart.

Therein lies the beauty of hide glue.  Furniture restorers like it for that reason, plus the fact that it is period correct.  Stinks to high heaven though.  Even the Titebond pre-mixed version has a distinct odor.
