As some of you know, I have personally met several of the scroll saw family members. As a result, I have some new friends that I contact whenever I have the opportunity to do so. I have been able to go to  Paul's (scrappile) house several times and we have become great friends and talk often on the phone. The first person I met from here was Travis, our chief cook and bottle washer. You know, the person that does all the hard work to keep us up and running smoothly. We had lunch together,  a couple of years ago. And Ralph who lives in Aloha, Oregon. We too have met and chatted a couple of times. Anyway yesterday I had the opportunity to drive 45 minutes and meet yet another rather new and very talented member. He is not only very talented but he was very enjoyable to talk with. His name is Bill and he goes by 'cashew', here. Usually after I have visited with one of our members, people ask, "where are the photos ?". So this  time I took a photo of both of us to show you. I am the ugly one on the left side in the photo. If you have never met any of the members here, I would suggest that you take the time to do so. An hour drive is worth your time.

It would be nice to know another scroller to share a hobby with. Overall, there does not seem to be many scrollers as opposed to other hobbies. While I was a model railroader for more than 40 years I met literally hundreds of fellow modelers.

I wish there were more near me. It appears there are only 3 or 4 and none of them are active on the Village. I'm hoping there will be more in Tennessee.

That was great for both of you.  We almost made it didn't we Dick? :)

Marg

How true, Marg. I was so disappointed to not have that honor. Things just didn't allow it to, but you are always welcome to come back to the States and this time, maybe Arizona would have something that might interest you enough to spend a little time here

They don't know what they are missing with all the other great people and also many great pattern designs etc.. Some are online and I tell them about the village etc.. but they don't seem interested..

they just do not understand what they are missing by not connecting with others that have the same love for scrolling

I am blessed to have a significant scroll saw club locally, of which I was the president for many years.  When Fox Chapel had an open house three ears in a row, I got to meet and have dinner with many SSWWC forum members. It is a lot of fun to meet folks in person.

And I  bet they brought a lot of blessing to you, just to be able to share what you both enjoy

That is Fantastic Dick I met a Fellow Scroller this wknd at the Flea Market,He wasn't a member,I did tell him about the Village,he said he would be sure to check us out.Hey Octoolguy I'm in Southern Mid Teen, just 5 or 6 miles north of Ala.😃

I always ask a scroller I meet, like at the wood store for example, if they are members of any scroll page and tell them to look into Scrollsaw Village. You never know what might come of giving the invitation to others

Tennessee?  Are you moving to there? That is a long way from California

That's the plan. We want to move to Tennesse for many reasons. One, many friends have already moved there. Far cheaper to live, the opportunity to have an actual house again. And, it's a RED state. More our style of thinking. I might even have a big shop. My dream is a home with a walkout basement with living quarters upstairs.

Well Ray, where in our great state are you looking? TN covers a lot of territory from East to West in particular. Just like any where, you have people of all thoughts and beliefs and the entire state and it’s populous is not RED. (just don’t want you to be mislead 😉.) We do get a lot of retirees from other states since we do not have an income tax per se (there is a “Hall tax” which is on investments so some do pay some taxes on income from that.  Sales tax is high - almost 10% and paid on almost anything including groceries. Some exceptions. Property taxes are relatively low, and not much taxes on annual car tags though some pay a little wheel tax on top of car registrations in some areas. All that is reliant on the county and/or city you live in.  We get a lot of Northerners (And some from out west) who retiree further south, find it too hot or miss the “seasons” and move “half way” back. 😉 While I love my state, just like any where, it’s not perfect. 😉🤨 When are you thinking about making the move? I recall not that long ago you said you would like to move from CA but your wife wouldn’t. 😉

Yes, I agree.. we are both always there but the last couple years I had to make it a short day and just go in for the deals at scoot back home.. Now that my youngest has a drivers license I don't have to make sure to get him to and from school etc.. so now I should be able to make it a whole day and actually enjoy the events of the wood expo besides the deals on the lumber.. :)

California is one of the most expensive states to live in, for sure. We had no plans to move to Arizona but we are glad we have done so. That is a long way away from where you are now. Have you been looking at houses on line yet? Good luck, I hope it works out as well for you as it has for us

We bought a motor home to use in our search. We will go back there in it and spend a couple of months looking at areas. Once we determine where we want to live, we will come back here and sell our home. Once it is sold, we will pack, ship and store everything back there. Then we go back for good in the motor home and find/buy a home. We can live in the motor home until everything is done. Once we buy a place, we'll immediately start saving about $15k a year because we won't be paying rent. We can buy back there for less than what our mobile home is worth. And property taxes are about the same outside city limits. I've done some homework but still have some to do. Thanks for your wishes.

She has since decided that we'd be much better living somewhere else. I did no coaxing. She is just sick and tired of how this state is being run. Into the ground. Not a good place for retirees. No way to hedge the rising taxes. We are looking somewhere in the Knoxville area. I was already warned not to buy in city limits because of the double taxation. So we will try to find something out in the county. Our closest friends are in Dandridge but I'm afraid that might be a bit too isolated for Barb. If you have any info or suggestions/advice, I'm all ears at this point.

I must say that there are two or three close to me here is South Carolina, but all are inactive. I have found one where I work, but she is just starting. In fact, She has a saw she got from Harbor Freight (I know, first problem) that isnt cutting right. I am going to take it home and see if I can align it up. I dont want her to lose interest just because of a bad saw. I may be asking for some advice in the future. 😉

Ray, living in NY, I am curious what the average taxes are where you live now in CA and where you plan to go in TN.  We have some friends that just had a house built near Asheville NC.

Your idea of investigating different areas in your motor home is brilliant! most people go somewhere on vacation for a week or two, fall in love buy house ,move , and then find it is not as great as they thought it was.  Good luck in your search. I did live in Merced CA for a few years.

I live in an incorporated village so it has its own taxes. My wife and I love being near the water (3/4 mile from the bay and 2 miles by boat to the Ocean) I rented down the street from my  current home for 16 years. always wanted the house that we now own.

I swore I would never go back to Long Island after 11 years in the AF, I will be here for the duration, everywhere that I lived around the country had some thing special to offer,  but this is home.

Our combined county and village taxes are less than 1K a month.  We could not rent an apartment for that.

Just as an eye opener A magnificent house on the bay just south of us has county taxes of 56K a year plus village tax which ads at least another 2K.
