Lets Talk Sanding Disc For Random Orbit Sanders

Been somewhat slow here and I'm going to need to buy some sanding disc again.. was thinking about ordering some online..  What brand and where do you all get your sanding disc at?

Me? I've used the Norton brand from Harbor Freight in the past and then I found the Norton brand from Menards.. I had been using it ever since until my last time I seen a package of Diablo at my local lumber supplier store.. so I bought the 50 packs of the various grits I use.. I like the stuff.. seems to be long lasting etc.. I think longer lasting than the Norton I had been using..  I bought some Mastercraft ( I think it was ) from Menards and that stuff clogged up just putting it on the sander before touching the wood.. Must have came from the factory clogged up.. maybe it was made clogged up, 😂  Hahaha..

I'm probably going to go with the Diablo or Norton again.. but if I get it locally I need to take a 40 mile each way trip to the lumber store.. Hate to drive that just for sanding disc.. Menards is closer but not by a lot... so was thinking about ordering it online..

Anyway, I know some folks talked about Kingspore?  But they have so many options to choose from I don't know what I should try..

So what do you use and where are you getting it from?

Made In The USA Sanding Disc is a BIG PLUS if you know of any... Just Sayin :)

( I think Norton is USA made )

I am lucky.  Klingspor has a couple locations in NC.  The closest one is 5 minutes from my dentist office.  I also belong to a couple wood working groups that use one of their locations for meetings and we do demos there from time to time.  Well we did prior to Covid-19.  I have tried many brands and I find the Klingspor paper, while more expensive, lasts a lot longer and is thus worth the upfront cost.

I like the Klingspor discs.  I've also used the Diablo discs when I wanted to just pick up something locally.

From Klingspor, I get the PS33 Stearate Aluminum Oxide H&L discs.  I have no problems with them loading up.  I don't typically sand a lot of resinous woods, but the zinc stearate in these discs is supposed to help prevent the discs from clogging.

I have been using Diablo and am very happy with it. I have read or seen a video about a product called Abrenet (?) . It's more of a mesh sanding disc instead of the paper backed stuff. I believe it is hook and loop also. Wish I could remember more about it.

Yeah some of the Diablo disc have a cloth backer piece you stick to your sander hook and loop pad and then the sandpaper sticks to that.. I haven't tried them but the sales guys said he bought some and said they do last longer but he still preferred the regular paper ones.. I guess the cloth back thing is supposed to "breath" and are cooler running and also helps with dust collection? I don't know as I haven't tried them.. I'm not sure if this is what you was referring to?

I'm a Klingspor guy. Been using them for about 20 years or so. I just started using their soft circular pads with various grits for sanding and shaping my Intarsia. Very satisfied so far. They have many sanding accessories also. I do however find their web site hard to navigate.

I believe Klingspor has a factory in Hickory, NC.  Don't know what products are made there.

Yes they have a facility in Hickory NC in addition to several retail stores.  It is also their US Headquarters.  Actual many of their abrasives come from Germany.

I have been using these discs for 20 years and won’t change.  Uneeda Ekablue. https://www.sandpaper.com/abrasives/ekablue/

I buy boxes of 100 at a time so they last me a while and I always purchase the Ekablue versions.  I use a 6 hole pattern and do not have any clogging issues and am very happy with the life I get out of each disc. I also like that the boxes are stamped “made in the USA”.  You can find distributors on there website, I did notice locations in Michigan and NC.

I'll take a look. Always interested in things made in America

Thanks

Update.
I just looked them up. They are only about a mile and half from me. That's the good news.  Unfortunately, they only sell wholesale. This is what's on there local website.

"Distributor & Wholesaler to Professional Woodworkers". You have to open a business account with them. I'm just a hobbyist

I haven’t bought any in a couple of years because as I mentioned  I buy in boxes of 100 but I Do recall purchasing them online. If I can find the website I will post it.

Just found them on Amazon who I dislike giving my business but it is an option..

Also sold here:  http://topindustrial.biz/uneeda-ekablue-5-100-grit-finer-psa-sanding-disc-100-ct-carton/  These guys are in Burnsville MN.

A box of 100 would be perfect for me.. I buy the 50 packs now and have to buy them about every 3 - 5 months.. I'm going to look through all these suggestions and look at what's USA made etc.. then maybe give some of these a try.. I haven't really looked.. but I suspect the Diablo is not a USA made product..

Thanks everyone for your replies.. Hopefully a few more will come along and add to the topic..

I use both kinds of diablo and like the paper backed as well. Kevin when you get sandpaper at Johnson's Workbench pickup Baltic Birch plywood and some hardwood. That way your 40 mile trip will be expensive but worthwhile.

Problem with that is.. I bought a lot of lumber at last years expo.. I haven't even touched any of it yet as I've been trying to use up the free lumber that I picked up from my brothers mill that is now finally dried enough .. The only lumber I have touched is the Poplar as I went on a puzzle making frenzy and made around 300 or so puzzles in the last few months.. I've got enough lumber that I doubt I'll buy anything at this years expo if I even attend this years. Think I have around 30 sheets of BB ply.. and haven't touched much of that either.. But I need to start on my ornament making very soon.. so some of them will be used up for that..

I've used Porter Cable (usually) and some Diablo, (8-hole)...I've used the PC since my first ROS...Dewalts and Bosches.

I buy them locally in 25 and 50 pack...

They don't fill up unless used on poly, varnish, waxes or similar finishes...for that I use my Stanley 80 scraper or card scraper...(until my thumbs complain) 🙂
