Poplar Plywood

I was watching some Carter Johnson videos about making jigsaw puzzles and he said he preferred using 1/4” poplar plywood for his puzzles.  Anyone know where you can buy poplar plywood?  Also, is there a special type of poplar plywood to get that won’t have voids or is all of the poplar plywood solid and “void” of voids?  HA!

Carter got his fringe wildwood or cherrytree if I remember correctly.

Ken, I believe Fred meant "Fringe" to read "From" Cherry Tree toys purchased Wildwood. and they have lots of scrolling stuff. Try the link

Home Depot sells poplar plywood. I have had good luck with their plywood. I just ordered a piece of 4' x 4' maple , good one side 1/4" plywood and am very satisfied. Took about a week to get it delivered. it was free shipping also.

If you read any of Carter Johnson's articles carefully it is important to note he use 5 Ply 1/4" poplar core plywood.  The make up of the core is the key.  Not all poplar plywood you buy is 5 Ply poplar core so shop carefully.

I agree with Scott. I use a lot of ¼" ply and always look for  the 5ply as it's a beautiful wood to cut.

Carter used the poplar ply because of the lower price, but you can use 5 ply BB and not have an issue. The main difference in the two, is the price. What I've found to be a real good product for puzzle cutting, is the 5' by 5' sheets of underlay, it is often made of poplar, and there's no voids in it, plus it's quite a lot cheaper then most other plywood.
