What hinges to use?

I'm going to make some scroll saw keepsake boxes for Christmas presents this year. Looking for suggestions on the best type of hinges to use and where can I buy them?. I will make the boxes out of solid 1/4" red oak or maple. Maybe both. Below is one pattern I will use. There are others.

Thanks

I have used small decorative brass hinges on boxes like that.  You can get them at most of the box stores and hardware stores.  They come with small nails to hold them on, which I don't like, so I got some 1/4" brass screws to use with them.  With 1/4" wood, you may need to file or grind off the very tip so they don't go all the way through the wood.  The screws will need predrilled holes to fit into, but they hold a lot better than nails.  I use a hinge bit to drill the holes, which makes life a little easier.  By the way, I like the box.  You did a great job on it.  Someone is going to be very happy.

I had to google it... and your favorite store has them.. looking at the pictures it looks to me like the outer art lines up with the hole in the hinge and then you get your hole perfectly centered into the hinge hole for the screws to go in and sink without getting them off centered etc.. I may be wrong on that..

Here's a few places I have bought hinges and catches from for boxes.
The type of hinge 1st depends upon the type of lid you use, overhang, flush, inside, apron etc and if you are prepared to house them in or only want surface mounts.
I go along with Tom, and never use nails, although that is what some of the smaller hinges and catches come supplied with. I always use screws

I have also used Quadrant hinges. They are neat as they incorporate a stay, but take a little more work to fit then standard type hinges

Wisdom of the Hands: quadrant hingesAnother type I use are the concealed hinges, barrel hinge

Hi Ben, can’t really help you on hinges and looks like you got lots of potential sources already. However, I did want to say what a beautiful box you have crafted. Should be loved by anyone who gets one. Second, I also wanted to ask if you could share information on where to find that pattern if you don’t mind. Love the butterflies.

I haven't actually made that box yet. That is a picture of the box I'm going to make.

I have daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters that will love these types of boxes.

Watch out with the brass screws. They will snap off in an instant. I drill pilot holes and I screw in a steel screw of the same size, fully seating it to insure the hole can accept the brass hardware.

Yep, I've snapped the head off those cheap tiny brass screws. Excellent tip. Thank you

Thanks for the tips.

I haven't made that box yet. That is just a picture of one of the boxes I intend to make.

Russell, I have not used them on 1/4" 6mm but have on 3/8" 10mm.  Not sure how small you can actually get those hinges.

I saw some 5mm barrel hinges at Rockler and Woodcraft. Nor really sure if they will work on 1/4" lumber. I searched for 4mm barrel hinges, but couldn't find any.

Putting a 5mm hinge in 6mm (1/4") material is a scary thought. One half mil left on each side just invites the "wood sprites" to work their mischief. Breathe wrong and you're looking at a blowout.

Thanks. That’s Sue Mey’s site. She makes excellent patterns. I will check it out.
