Old Joe
I have several Dremels and when I do anything extensive they all get really hot. I am looking for an alternative. Steve Good has been kind of promoting the Pegas through Bear Woods. It is quite pricy, but I would be willing to spring for it if I was convinced it was all that. Has anybody got one? And, if so, do you have any feedback? OCtoolguy and amazingkevin
DJ2772
I just got one about a month ago (strangely the same time I started doing segmentation/intarsia) and I have to say I love it. It accepts bits from my dremmel tool pack and makes sanding over edges a snap. My first segmentation project I sanded by hand as my dremmel was way to bulky to do it effectively and the second project I used the rotary and it was a night and day difference. The foot pedal is great and the tool is very easy to hold in your hand like a pencil. Bits also can be swapped out in about 5 seconds. My only con I have so far is the quick disconnect for bits. When you tighten the bit by torquing the tool in two different directions, it is loose when locked and tight when open. Just seems like it should be the other way around, but it doesn't interfere with using it. If you end up getting it I hope you enjoy it. Old Joe
Thanks for the input, DJ. Do you know if it will take the Dremel keyless chuck?
DJ2772
I'm not sure on that one, sorry.
Roberta Moreton
Wouldn’t the flex shaft be about the same tho?

NC Scroller
I know several power carvers and they use a Foredom. They have different packages but the price on Amazon runs $250-$350.

I think it's either a discontinued item or the website is wrong. I couldn't see any pictures of the 900 one and it gave a 404 error when I clicked on it. The actual tool is the Marathon that's made in Korea. That's a better price though on Amazon than the marathon, plus you won't have to wait on customs if shipping outside Canada. Puzzleguy
What about the foredom ? I have two of them and a Grizzly copy - all three are first class - i even think the grizzly is alot less than the Foredom - if your a pro Id get a Foredom ! very durable ( mines like 30 years old ) Old Joe
Old Joe
Thanks for all of the feedback. After doing a fair amount of research I decided to go with the Foredom 5240 from Klingspor’s. I friend of mine does more woodcarving than anybody I know and it was his recommendation, too. The price doesn’t seem to vary much from one place to another, but some don’t charge sales tax on out of state orders. This is an example of the woodcarving my friend does that convinced me to go Foredom. He has tried them all and I figured I’d take his advice. . Denny Knappen
I have the Marathon K 35 Cube in stock, sold by Pegas. List is $159. My price is $140 plus shipping. NC Scroller, John B and Woodrush
Denny Knappen
As a follow up to my previous post, Pegas lists three Micromotors by Marathon. As stated, I stock the K35. Marathon Micromotor 50K lists for $922.20 Marathon Micromotor N7 lists for $389.00 Marathon Micromotor K35 lists for $159.00 NC Scroller
Old Joe
Thanks for the info, Denny. I was undecided between the K35 and the Foredom, but after talking it over with my friend, I decided to go with the Foredom, which unfortunately is quite a bit more expensive. Your price on the Marathon is fantastic, as was your price on the Pegas Scrollsaw I bought from you. Rockytime
I have is very nice flex shaft tool from Grobet. I think it is just a chrome plated Foredom tool. I love it. My only problem is that it is mounted on one of my benches and so is not really portable. I got rid of the the rheostat foot pedal and replaced it with a HF router speed controller combined with a foot switch as used on scroll saws. I got tired of having my get lazy and allowing the unit t slow down or not keeping a constant speed. I control the speed with the router speed control. I only mention this as I have found it convenient. Old Joe
Fedido
Thanks for sharing this. The last time I used my dremel, it started to overheat and I ended up taking a few mandatory breaks for it to cool down.
CharleyL
Do you have a good air compressor that can handle 4 cfm or more at 60 or higher psi? I found that an air powered was my best choice for this. Here is one. https://www.amazon.com/Astro-218-8-Inch-Pencil-Grinder/dp/B000RH36WU/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&qid=1597148746&refinements=p_n_power_source_browse-bin%3A9060580011&s=power-hand-tools&sr=1-3 At less than $40, it's a great deal. It uses the same bits as a Dremel, but runs faster, so it has less side pull and cuts cleaner. My hands get cold when using it, never hot. Rolf
Old Joe, your friend does some amazing work!! I have Dremel with a flex shaft, it is ok but I wanted something a bit nicer/ better. The air powered unit that CharleyL suggested is also available from HF. I have one of those for about 20 years https://www.harborfreight.com/pneumatic-18-in-micro-die-grinder-kit-60244.html It is a bit noisy as is the compressor I was using. So I bought a Rampower hand piece (45,000 RPM) it allows you to reverse direction , great with burrs, and I have the foot pedal speed Controller. Absolutely love it. And if you really want to go nuts you can get a Vortex F5 Ar power carver that spins at 400,000 rpm. It was a Christmas present a couple of years ago. It has a super quiet compressor, Yes my wife spoils me. The higher the speed the more control. the bits don't grab they just cut, it is like writing with a pen. you can see the size difference between the Rampower and the Vortex. The guys who carve gun stocks use the Vortex type tools. A flex shaft like the Foredom, has a lot of torque for heavier stock removal. So it really comes down what you plan on doing. I am a tool junkie. Edited August 11, 2020 by Rolf John B
