I just spent over a hour on a word saying project only to have not only the last 2 letters break but also go fling off into never-never land!! I'm going to have to start from the beginning. By the time you get to the end of a project, my may lose some of your concentration and also just become lack-a-dazical. I have no idea how to spell that. Anyway, when you first start, you are 100% into it but by the time you near the end, your mind has moved on to the next part of the project. It's just human nature and something to be worked on. I'm 77 and still trying to do it but each day, the solution is farther and farther from me. Best of luck. I cut a puzzle, and while I was sanding a large piece broke off and went flying who knows where. I did as @trackman suggested and just as I finished cutting the replacement i happened to look under a cart and there was my missing piece. Personally, I eat chocolate and put it aside and come back to it another day and if I can 'cut' the broken bit and glue, I will. You're in good company, not that it helps, and we all sympathise. In a batch of toy trucks, I made recently three of them did not make it through the build because of defects that did not show up until after they were cut. Then there is just me being clumsy. I once dropped a toy covered with wet paint. The toy was covered with dirt and damaged to boot. The worst I can remember was when cutting some dragon puzzles from a poplar 2x6 that normally will yield 8 to ten puzzles I only got four usable dragons. I don't repair any of them. And I talk to it, nice at first..."OK Baby, easy, come on, etc. BUT...If it cracks or breaks...well...I can't put that on this forum LOL I try to "creative engineer" it to work around the break, especially if the broken piece "takes off for the Bahamas...LOL" But, there are those times... like on this pattern there WAS a third tiny little man. He didn't listen to me when I was talking to him and broke twice anyway....SO I WHACKED HIM! The other two look good in the space anyway...and they behaved. Letters started to fly off but because of what it was I kept going. If I understand it correctly they aren't having the Expo.. only having sales on the lumber... I have enough lumber to last me well into next year and probably longer.. The only thing I could use is a few sheets of BB ply.. I'm not going to make it to the show this year as I said.. I have plenty of lumber thanks to my brother giving me a lot of cutoffs etc from his sawmill.. I should go one of these days and pay them a visit.. I don't think I've been there this whole year.. maybe I did go January or Feb.. They all probably think I got the Covid and croaked, LOL There is a store up there that my wife really likes to go to... so I usually drop her off and head over to Johnson's to look around.. but with the Covid it had been shut down and also we both have been very busy so we just haven't gone out shopping much at all.. Our 27th wedding anniversary is on the 11th.. this show timing every year seems to make it tough to take a trip etc.. so with most of the expo cancelled out and I don't need the lumber.. The savings on a few sheets of ply isn't such a big deal with everything else being cancelled out I guess we'll be doing something else.. We usually go to the frontier days and there is always a lot of events going on in the small town.. Thinking we may take a small road trip this time.. Hopefully this will all be behind us next year and more back to normal and they'll run the full show with seminars etc.. SO.. However, seriously, you really need to take a break and not push to finish. As stated previously, it is easy to lose concentration, especially if you have been at it for a while. Most everyone makes some sooner or later. I know over the years I have made my share. As you have more hours into this craft you will make less of it. Then when I was on the home stretch and sanding the inside it slipped from my hands and broke in half. I tried to glue it back together but it never was the same again. Rolf Posted August 30, 2020 Report Share Posted August 30, 2020 One thing I have learned is that as I get towards the end of a project the tendency is to push a bit to get it done and usually with a dulling blade. Now no matter how close I am to the finish, if the blade doesn't follow the line as normal or I find myself pushing. STOP and put in a new blade.
