used some tung oil on a few test pieces that part was easy enough putting on the shellac or lacquer is a pain...what did you use in your 50/50 dip...

Don't you get an extra queen when a pawn reaches other side..

PS..thanks for the compliment ☺

Opps!  Been long time cents I played a game of chess. Right on extra queen.  I use mineral spirits & boiled linseed oil in a 50/50 mix.

besides the dip .. did you use anything else? I thought a protective finish was needed on top.. Excuse my ignorance but finishing is the most confusing part for me...I might have some sort of mental block.

Not on my chess pieces. The 50/50 brought out the color I wanted.

I definitely recommend a topcoat after the oil is dry. I like spray can lacquer. Others use polyurethane or shellac . A topcoat is necessary to protect the wood. Oils from hands will eventually penetrate the wood, and so will dust and dirt. It will soon become hard to keep clean.

On a test piece I applied minwax tungoil finish..and brushed on 2 coats zinnster dewaxed shellac.steel wooled between coats.looks pretty good..I think this is the what ill do ..I do not have the patience to attempt something else.

What ever works for you is good as long as it is a topcoat.

That looks great Anthony.   I'm not a chess player, but my kids learned to play in elementary school.  Maybe one day I will attempt to create a set with a board.  Can only hope it turns out half as good as yours and Trackman's.

Thanks..I found it surprisingly easier than I thought it would be...Tbe biggest pain is the sanding..I am sure you will do a great job...I find most people will be surprised at what they can do if they just try....good luck

Ps..I just looked you up you are listed as a zen scroller.. lol..im sure you can handle this .I thought I was being inspirational 😪

Hi..

Just a little update finished cutting all the pieces including an extra queen..need to finish with a light sanding and I guess tung oil and shellac..I am pretty happy with the way it is coming out so far ..this is only my third scroll saw project ..I did a gear clock a simple letter "B" one of Steve goods and this....any suggestions on the easiest finish ...This is the part I have no patience for..

Your chess pieces look awesome. You’ve done a great job on this.  Did you make the board too?

Hi all ..I am using a Wen 3922 scroll saw...Would I benefit from upgrading to a used RBI 220vs or 216VS. I see a lot of them between $120 and $250 .... I really would not want to spend more than that right now..Or should I just stick with the Wen for now. To be honest while my experiences with the Wen have been positive, it is my first scroll saw and I do not know the advantages of having a better quality scroll saw. For all I know the older RBI might be a step backwards.

Thank You

Anthony

Anthony - you are being inspirational.  That "ranking" on the side has nothing to do with one's scrolling abilities - it is based on the amounts of posts one makes here in the Village forums!  I have been scrolling for about 4 1/2 years now and joined the Village shortly after so that is based on my posts over that time period nothing more. I don't get to scroll daily, sometimes not even weekly and I consider myself more of an "intermediate beginner" - a "jack of all trades" and master of none. 😉 I find inspiration here everyday I get a chance to come and see what others are doing and sharing - from beginners to experts - I find useful information and inspiration each day. The fact that you are using a Wen scroll saw, and did such great work, is an example that the tool does not have to be the top of the line to produce nice work.  I can't answer your questions on the other saws, and have never used a Wen myself.  However, from what I have read and seen over the past 4 1/2 years - the Wen is probably the most basic saw you could have and anything is an upgrade from there.  Good luck with finding a new one. Let us know what you decide.

Damn ..I thought I was speaking to a God like scroll sawer..😆...Im sure you do great for yourself...I know the Wen is bottom of the barrel. I thought it worked just fine...But like they say "ignorance is bliss" maybe I should just stick with what I have. I think I probably need a bigger bandsaw anyway,  I have a 9" Ryobi..looking at the 14/12 or 14BX Laguna s I want to be able to resaw  wider boards...I will put scroll saw search on back burner..
