danny Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 No nursing home for me.... I’ll be checking into a Holiday Inn! With the average cost for a nursing home care costing $188.00 per day, there is a better way when we get old and too feeble. I've already checked on reservations at the Holiday Inn. For a combined long term stay discount and senior discount, it's $59.23 per night. Breakfast is included, and some have happy hours in the afternoon. That leaves $128.77 a day for lunch and dinner in any restaurant we want, or room service, laundry, gratuities and special TV movies. Plus, they provide a spa, swimming pool, a workout room, a lounge and washer-dryer, etc. Most have free toothpaste and razors, and all have free shampoo and soap. $5-worth of tips a day and you'll have the entire staff scrambling to help you. They treat you like a customer, not a patient. There's a city bus stop out front, and seniors ride free. The handicap bus will also pick you up (if you fake a decent limp). To meet other nice people, call a church bus on Sundays. For a change of scenery, take the airport shuttle bus and eat at one of the nice restaurants there. While you're at the airport, fly somewhere. Otherwise, the cash keeps building up. It takes months to get into decent nursing homes. Holiday Inn will take your reservation today . And you're not stuck in one place forever -- you can move from Inn to Inn, or even from city to city. Want to see Hawaii ? They have Holiday Inn there too. TV broken? Light bulbs need changing? Need a mattress replaced? No problem.. They fix everything, and apologize for the inconvenience. The Inn has a night security person and daily room service. The maid checks to see if you are ok. If not, they'll call an ambulance . . . Or the undertaker. If you fall and break a hip, Medicare will pay for the hip, and Holiday Inn will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life. And no worries about visits from family. They will always be glad to find you, and probably check in for a few days mini-vacation. The grand-kids can use the pool. What more could I ask for? So, when I reach that golden age, I'll face it with a grin. After reading this I say it could work. Yes? No? Danny :+} new2woodwrk, jollyred, WayneMahler and 6 others 2 1 6 Quote

new2woodwrk Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 An interesting concept, however... If you have a pet(s), you won't be able to leave it while you move around. They frown on pets being left alone - we travel often with our dogs. If you have anything of value, you'll have to either rent storage or store it somewhere trusting. Ouch, price just went up but I guess if you're in a home you don't really have anything either. I'll assume you'll be done with scrolling and no longer have any hobbies? There are/were a few articles written about this type of retirement here is one example: https://www.doughroller.net/retirement-planning/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-holiday-inn-retirement-plan/ There are others, but this one outlines a few normal drawbacks The wife and I have thought about a cruise retirement plan - still working out the details, but for less than the price of nursing facility we can travel the world. I don't really think it feasible either though - I'm too deep into "stuff" and there would be a severe lack of freedom All in all, while the financials sound intriguing, the daily grind would be boring as all get up Humorous option though amazingkevin 1 Quote
Dan Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 Danny, if enough of us old farts get together we can make it a community and convert a room on each floor into a workshop. Maybe we wont need all that parking and can convert it to a community garden. Keep thinking man. amazingkevin, danny and Roberta Moreton 3 Quote
amazingkevin Posted October 30, 2020 Report Posted October 30, 2020 If the urologist goes in me one more time I'll need assisted living. He tore me up so bad that it felt like someone kicked me between the legs just trying to get out of a chair. Once up I'm ok but getting there is another story. And he wanted to go in again with another test. same tool . I told him you can do that but whos going to take care of me when you do. I struggled for 40 days and I think going in this soon it will be a lot worse. He gave me no answer except he would give me zannex this time .That's not going to help when I leave. new2woodwrk 1 Quote

Urology seems to be from the dark ages. They couldn't put a catheter in me and had staff rotating trying to get it in. Hurt like the dickens. Kidney stone needed laser and I was stripped raw bleeding. Hurt going to the bathroom to the point I was just about holding it not to go. They went up me fro a stint and again I was raw and bleeding. I'm on blood thinner so that became and issue every time. There are fiber optic cameras and they use equipment that could rate as schedule 40 pipe. Its crude and painful. I HEAR YOU! I worked in a nursing home going to college. The people there are there cause they can't care for themselves. Spent the day dead lifting people out of bed and off the toilet. Many had know idea who I was or who they were. Some walked around the halls lost. If anyone was actually thinking of using a hotel rather than a nursing home, doesn't need the nursing home. Rockytime Posted October 31, 2020 Report Posted October 31, 2020 I am fortunate to have two wonderful daughters. My youngest says neither I or my wife will never be in a nursing or assisted living facility. She says, "I can change bed pans as good as anyone." My oldest daughter says, " I'll pay the bills." How I love those two girls. Even if that does not work they are always here for us. My youngest daughter has a daughter who has spina bifida. My daughter has to lift Gaby, an adult, in and out of chairs, bed, cars, etc. I feel so badly for those who have no one to watch out for them. Until this year my wife who was always very physically fit shoveled the snow. She has now developed so many issues she barely functions. We are so fortunate to have a neighbor do that for us. Although life can be difficult we are so blessed. amazingkevin, new2woodwrk, danny and 1 other 4 Quote

danny Posted November 2, 2020 Author Report Posted November 2, 2020 I feel the concept of living would really just not work very good. Older people have needs and those needs need other people to assist. So I say this way of life is not good. It was only a Copy/Post so Really, Really I didn't stop to think before posting it. Lets move on.... Danny Quote
jerrye Posted November 3, 2020 Report Posted November 3, 2020 Danny, I saw a similar post about living on a cruise ship in retirement a while back. Seems to make some sense, even when posted in jest... danny 1 Quote
