Need new printer

I currently have a brother laser, without scanner. I love it, but do miss the scanner from time to time.

If I needed one today I would buy this one, a laser all-in-one. I like the laser printers because the toner doesn't dry out between uses like inkjets often do, and the toner seems to last forever. I think I have bought tonner cartridge 2 times in 5 years.

I'm thinking about getting a new printer as well.. so this topic I will be following.. I'd like to get away from inkjet printers which is what I've had for always, LOL Are there laser printers with the wide format? My current printer can print 11 x 17 papers which is nice for those larger patterns.

A couple of years ago I bought a Brother all-in-one color laser printer. I love it! No messy ink to fool with. Never fails to print unless I forget to load the paper. It has a single sheet feed that allows me to print on the full page shipping labels that Kevin put me onto way back. I can't say enough good about this printer. I picked it up on sale from Amazon at the time for $227. It came with the starter cartridges and I'm still using them. There is a youtube video that shows how to "reset" the printer when it comes to that point where it wants you to buy new cartridges. So far, I'm still on the first ones. I did buy a black toner cartridge but it's still in the box. The number on my printer is MFC-9130CW. It has been discontinued but they are still out there.

My pattern printer is an old HP Laserjet that keeps on working. For printing different sizes, you will need software to adjust the sizes that you want, but the right software will let you do many different things. I use Photo Shop and Affinity. Either one lets me add many small patterns to a single sheet, so I don't waste paper. Many programs can do this, as well as let you design your own patterns. Some are free, and some not. I'm a pro photographer, so I use Photoshop and Affinity for working on my photo projects as well as my scroll saw patterns.

I have Brother inkjet, three in one.  It takes up to A3 paper, can copy and enlarge just like a copier, can scan and also copy multiple pages at once and print on both sides of the paper. I like the colour because I can alter the black lines to red on patterns for cutting. Also excellent for printing labels, business cards and stickers.

Brother HL-3170CDW is what I use. The lighting got my first Brother printer. It has wired, wireless, and USB connections and works with any operating system. A big plus because this is a 100% Linux shop. It works great and never has a problem. There are lots of 3rd party toner cartridges available for it cheap.

I worked in IT for more than 30 years. I that time, I came to call printers semi-automatic paper shredding devices. I have never had a jam other issue with this printer.

I'm not too fond of any combination printer scanners. What you get many times is an OK printer and a poor scanner, which may be OK for your purposes, but remember that if the scanner stops working, you have to replace the scanner and the printer. It also adds complexity. I have an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner purchased directly from Epson.

I bought a color laser a few years ago and it was some of the best money I have spent in years.

No scanner but if I want to scan something, I just take a pic with my phone and email it to myself.  Then I can print it from there.

As far as making bigger pics, no printers will do that without spending a ton of money.

I just insert pics into excel and make them bigger that way, print them out and tape the edged together.

Looking at the laser printers tonight on best buy website.. All of them look like they have two drawers for paper? I sure could use one for label paper and one for standard paper... I cannot see anywhere in the specs about two paper trays but they "look like" they do?  That be a plus if so and worth more money in my book.. I'm always opening my single paper tray to add my label papers every time I need to print a pattern.. Be nice to just hit print and select what paper drawer to use.. Is there such a thing?

Ahh okay, I kinda wondered that.. Thank you for the photos that helps a lot.. Sure would be nice to have two paper trays.. not sure if the make them like that or not..

Actuality, they do make two drawer printers. When I was researching printers a few months ago, I saw several that loaded two different sizes or styles of paper. Perfect for regular printing paper and mailing labels. But you pay up for it.

Mine has 2 trays, one for A4 and one for A3 as well as a single feed slot for heavy card. It's a Brother MFC J6920DW
you can also enlarge or reduce from the printer, just like a copier.
I don't use Brother cartridges, I use generic ones, a fraction of the cost and last just as long and give an equally good finish if you are printing photos onto photographic paper.

HI,

I have a brother black and white laser printer with scanner and I love it for scroll saw patterns. When you buy new toner get the regular Brother brand and the larger soze cartridge, I recently got a cheaper one off ebay and it was not the best. Didn't last long. Also about once a week pull your cartridge out of the holder and genly shake it up and down a couple times to stir up the toner so you get even color.

We have a Epson XP340,bought it at Walmarts. It is wireless and the ink cartridges are the cheapest of pretty much all of the other machines.  I can do black and white or color.  Scans well, I have even put flat ornaments on the scanner and got a good pattern.  No Problem.  We buy our cartridges off E-bay and I can always get a set (4- one black and one of each color) for less then $30.00. Just be sure the seller is NOT in China, Korea etc. Its a great little machine for around $40.00.

Some of the better ones will let you add a second tray. They usually stack. They are pricy, you can expect to spend $200 or more for a second tray.

Dang it! This is a most disgusting bunch of posts. Hadn't thought about a laser printer. I have two ink jet printer and now (not my fault) I ended up ordering a laser printer. My wife wasn't much help. When I mentioned it to her she just told me to do whatever I want. Not much I can do about it now.

It is a BrotherDCPL2550DW. B&W with scanner. $159 at Amazon. Hope I like it. There are free returns.
