What is the advgantage of useing shelf liner?

IKE

Hey Ike, for me it's easier to use... lay it on a 6' board, spray adhesive on it to mount the patterns and after cutting it peels right off with no residue.  Quick and simple.  Here's a video I did a little while back... https://youtu.be/LPjY8lEnAA4

It keeps the shelves smooth and makes them easier to clean and no scratches to boot.

I was looking at the stuff one day at the dollar store and some "cat lady " 😂 was bragging about how good the stuff works.. she said she gets clear and covers her coffee table with it when the grandkids come over and they color with markers.. protects her table from a accident... then she went on talking about putting it on the wall and floor around the cats litter box in case the cats spray etc.. and instead of getting it on the wall or floor she just puts that liner down and then changes it every couple weeks..

Good ideas I suppose.. I never knew that it could be used on a shelf though as nobody ever mentioned that.😂.. I'm thinking it should be rebranded to scroll saw project liner.. I use it on my CNC router projects and when the router finishes the carving I use spray paint to paint the routed out parts then peel the liner off.. works quite well for that too..

It's sort of like Lipton's French Onion Soup Mix... who actually uses it for soup instead of French Onion dip?  LOL

I thank both of you for your coments I will consider it . I useally spray the wood with the spray glue a light coar spray in both directions to makle susre that I get it allcovered mount my pattern and roll it to make sure it is on correctly cut my parts. wipe the pattern with a coat of mineral sperits ueing a rag. the pattern comes off in one piece ( uesally) wipe the wood off with mineral sperits useing a rag. I will buy a roll of shelf liner and try it and then make up my mindd. Thanks again.

I shall wait with interest to see what you think. I too just spray my pattern and put directly onto my wood. When finished I wipe with white spirit and the whole thing just falls off, usually in one piece.   I'd like to know if shelf liner comes off just as easily, especially with a piece of intricate fretwork

Brend that was my thinking will it work better on the fretwork which is what I love doing I do puzzles and clocks to pay for my scrolling,. It will be a little while before I try shelf paper due to the weather my shop is unheated.

I used shelf liner on this project. Came off in one piece. Much easier than blue tape.

I think another great reason for using it over blue tape is cost. It is far cheaper to buy a 30 foot roll of the stuff for about $6. If you bought as much blue tape, you'd be spending upwards of $100 I'll bet. I do use it but I also use the full-page shipping labels too. I very seldom use the spray glue. The labels go right into my laser printer and come out great.

I like doing portrait fretwork.. just wish it'd sell as good as clocks and puzzles, LOL

I cut this portrait from solid 1/8 oak lumber.. You know how oak likes to break along the grain.. no issues at all with the shelf liner pulling off.. Usually comes right off real easy... but.. be careful of leaving it on for a period of time.. it seems to get more sticky as time goes on.. Usually no problems if it's only a couple weeks.. I had a stack of ornaments ready to cut and kept getting orders and then sidetracked etc.. was about 3 months.. it came off but was stuck fairly well.. I have had them where I needed to heat it because it was really stuck..

HI all

I have been using green painters tape for years and I agree with a post up above, that when it comes time to take it off, you end up with lots of little pieces. I just started using the clear stuff from Walmart and it is great. My wife suggested I take the roll and cut off about a few feet that roll it up in the opposite direction and put a rubber band around it and when its time to use it, it will lay flatter for you. I just take my little piece of plywood and lay it on the backside and cut around the board with a exacto knife and then peel it off and stick it to it. Works ver well I feel

Hi, Ike,
I still use the painters tape but, since it has been pointed out that you can buy rolls of the shelf liner so cheaply,
I think I will try that. I never liked the idea of having to put mineral spirits or paint thinner on projects to get the
glue residue off if you don;t use painters tape or something.

God Bless! Spirithorse

Hi Kevin:
If they were to rebrand the shelf liner for scrolling purposes the price would triple I'm sure
You never knew it could be used on shelves, eh!!! - That's hilarious....jk!!!

I tried the shelf liner.  The stuff I bought pulled off easily enough but left a sticky residue.  I have since gone back to blue painters tape.  I am much happier with pulling up multiple sections of tape rather than dealing with the sticky residue.

Here is the shelf liner I bought.  Other brands must be better judging by all the positive comments I see on this subject.  Just don't get this one.

I've been using the duck brand shelf liner since just after I started and learned it from several posts here.

There are basically 2 kinds - easy peel and and not so easy peel LOL

The 12" from what I can tell is the only easy peel available

The 18" liner is a good alternative, although it is not necessarily an easy peel product though it does come off fairly easily. However, it seem the glue on the 18" rolls is a bit tackier.

I bought 4 rolls of the 18" on sale at Amaz, and just bought 1 roll on Amaz of the 12"

I'm going to buy the 12" in bulk  I think, because of the less "tackiness" of the glue.

The nice thing about the 18" roll is how many boards I can prep.

Unlike @Iguanadon I do mine a bit differently. Rather than roll out the whole board ( I can't get 12" boards here, but now I can get 14" boards from my new source), I roll the liner on the width of the board in several sheets.

I'm buying my boards now in 16' boards cut in half then in quarters, so I cut 2 18" x 14" pieces then a 14" x 12", and line them up and stick em'

My only reason for using spray and placing directly onto wood and wiping with white spirit is that I've found that the pattern literally falls off. I cannot grip with my fingers, so find getting the 'end' of any tape, taking hold and peeling it off more or less impossible. Doing it the way I do means I have no problem.. Simples.  😉

So true that “what works for you best is the best way “. As long as you get to the finish line an you are happy with out come that is the main thing.

Again thanks for th inputs. But I think I wil stick with spraying the wood . The pattern does dalmost fall off the boarrd when you use a small amount of mineral Spirits some times I can't get my fingers working right . andd I have a full galon of spirits, which will last about 2 years at this rate @ $15 per galon i don't want to wast it. It works good for me and this old dog is to old to change his way.

It does make a big difference what brand you use. I always use the 12" DUCK brand stuff, and get it from Walmart or Amazon.

Last winter while down on the Mexican border I was running low. There was a Target next to the HEB grocery store (low on beer too) so I stopped there and grabbed a roll of 18" not paying attention to the brand. Save a trip over to Walmart and 6" wider too...good deal right...wrong! The stuff was a PIA to take off and pulled small splinters off BB, which never happened before. I went to Walmart and got the DUCK brand stuff I had been using... no more problems. Still have that 18" roll some where for other things...someday.
