Hi Paul and welcome home. Good to hear you have been well and just put your attentions elsewhere for a while. I understand about getting burned out. Glad you found the magazine locally and were able to get the pattern and give it ago, looks like you never missed anytime from the saw. Beautiful piece. Not sure if there are any hobby or craft stores in your area, but you could check there for stained glass. I know Hobby Lobby carries it. Of course, there is always Amazon no doubt.

Glad to see you back on here again. I do not think you will be able to stay away very long as there are just too many great people here and it is so easy to miss them all when one decides too be absent for awhile. We are going to Oregon on December 6th but will not have a car, so I most likely will not have the opportunity to go see you this time, as I always try to do when in Heppner. It will be a short visit and we will probably be doing some family Christmas time then. I will try to give you a call and at least chat with you some. Nicely done piece, as usual. I made another one for Sharon for our anniversary, which was yesterday. I did a little colorization to bring out the flowers within the leaves but decided not to do the leaves, as I was planning to do because I am not talented in that field at all. I did miss one of the cuts in one of the birds, just overlooked it and luckily I even missed it in my hole drilling.

You and Patti have a nice holiday season..

Dick

Well, for some reason, around last may, I decided I needed a break from scrolling.... I think I kinda got burned out and I also had neglected other important things because of the hobby.   Anyway... I did check in here once in a while just to see what was going on in the scrolling world...

A couple weeks ago, I spotted a post by @heppnerguy of a cutting he had done of a Fiona Kingdon patter that was in the last issue of SSW.  I really loved what he had done.   I don't take the magazine anymore and thought about ordering the issue,,, but with the cost of the mag and shipping... na, I think not.  A couple days latter, I was at a grocery store with my wife, and we were by the magazine rack and there, the first thing I saw was the latest issue of SSW.   I thought it must be an omen!  So I bought it.  Just finished cutting the pattern yesterday.  I wasn't sure I would make it through the cutting because it has been a while and it is not a simple pattern.  But, I did and am happy with the results... I haven't applied a finish yet.  I think I want to dip it and then spray with Deft Clear coat, but I also want to plan around with a stain glass for a backer.... I don't have any stain glass so I will have to learn something about that.  I cut it in 1/2" oak.

By the way, I did really miss the form, I am going to limit my time spent here, but very happy to be somewhat involved again... I have browsed around some and see some great projects have been done.

It good to see you again.  I must admit I have been checking to see if you have been visiting, I was going to send you a message but then I got sidetracked.:)  Hope you are keeping well.
That's a great looking plaque, you have not lost your touch.

Marg

Paul, great job on the cutting. Getting detail like that in 1/2” Oak takes a lot of patience. I have nothing against Baltic Birch, it has its place, but I really love the look and the soul of solid wood. Fiona’s work, and designs, are in a class of their own. She never uses patterns! She “sees” things in a piece of lumber and brings the image in her mind to life. I bought a Green Man pattern from her last year, cut it out of nominal 1” Red Oak, and backed it with stained glass. I used to cut a lot of glass, but rarely do it anymore. If we weren’t on total opposite sides of the continent I would happily cut your backing for you.

Paul you did a great job on Fiona's pattern.  I know what I am talking about because I am, right now, attempting to cut it out of 3cm thick Spalted Maple and it's a real effort.

I very much approve your intention to back it with glass.  That's also what I intend to do.  In the past, I have backed a few of Fiona's patterns with glass and they look great.   I'm attaching a photo of one of them:

Yep, I am a big fan of Ms. Kingdon.  I did the Bearded Viking one and now working on the "Entertwined Trees Heart".  I have several other of her patterns.  I said I did the one I posted here in Oak, but I didn't feel that was right,,, the wood just cut too easily for oak.  Did some research and I am now sure it is a beech board I purchased from Cherokee Woods in Calif.  Nice cutting wood.  Looks sorta like red oak but softer and a little more pinkish.
