Hudson River Rick
Convert black line to RED stroke in Inkscape Today, 11:04 PM I posted this topic on another scroll saw forum and got 2 responses. I couldn't get the one pertaining to inkscape to work and I did not try the other program, more importantly, good ole MAGIC FINGARS hit something that prevents me from entering a thank you to the 2 persons who tried to help me. Hi everyone, I purchased the Sue Mey "Modern Style" Nativity set and I am experiencing some difficulty following the black lines, can some one guide me thru the process of changing the black lines to red ones. I was due to have my first cataract removed on Dec. 3, but thanks to the craziness going on right now, our local hospitals have canceled all elective surgery, I have to admit that I didn't expect this to be elective, but... Anyway, I was able to load inkscape on my Apple Mac and I imported the the patterns that I purchased from Sue, but I can't change the stroke from black to red. I saved the file pattern as a PDF, but that did'nt help me. I have said this to you folks before, after I press the power on button on the computer, my confidence level takes a dive and all the uTube video's in the world do not seem to help. Thanks in advance if anyonr is brave enough to try to lead me through my dilemma.HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all, including our Canadian friends. We hope to take some time this year especially, to consider what we are THANKFUL for. OCtoolguy

Scrappile
Rick, I can do it, but I can't explain it.. I just fumble around until it happens... If you go to this video in the How To articles it explains it starting around 10minutes 20 seconds into the video. Before you do this you have to change your picture to a bit map....what ever that is. Select "Path" and the Bit Map option is under that. But this may get you into the right direction. I have not succeeded on a PDF film, I have had to change PDFs to a png or jpeg.. OCtoolguy
jollyred
I'll give it a try. 1. Use the selection arrow to select the line you wish to change. After selecting, check that it is a path by looking at the sentence near the bottom of the drawing, it should say "Path" and have some other information about the line. If it is not a path, go to the top of the drawing and select "path", then "change to path". 2. Once you are sure it is a path, and with the line still selected, place the selection arrow over one of the colors along the bottom of the drawing. Select whichever you want, in this case the red. Then right click on the mouse. This will bring up a dialog box with some selections of things to do. 3. Place the selection arrow over the command "set stroke" and right click. The line will change color to the one you selected. If you have any problem with this, contact me and I will try to help. Tom
Dan
Something else to check. If you have already did what Tom suggested and it still doesn't work, try this in Inkscape... 1. Select the object (which will probably be the entire image). 2. Click Path then Break Apart. You should break the image into several or many smaller parts. 3. Double-click the area you want to change to red line. 4. Click Object menu then Fill and Stroke. This should open the Fill and Stroke window. Select Stroke and adjust the sliders to change the color. You can also do as Tom said in his step 3. Hope it helps.
don in brooklin on
I went back on my post on the other site. I tried again it works on all the patterns I have from Sue. It is really important to firstly ungroup. (in object menu or shift ctrl g) The do trace bitmap. The path is on top and the image is below. Move over the path and then select image and delete. Select the path image and set the stroke either use the fill and stroke menu under object menu or right click on the red across the bottom and set stroke) If this does not work PM me the pattern and I will return. I will not copy or use as I respect all our pattern makers. I just tried a couple of patterns that I purchased from Sue.1. Open the PDF page in Inkscape2. Select picture and ungroup.3. Trace Bitmap (under Path tool)4. Select the image and delete.5. Select the Path and set stroke to red. Note, You will have both a stoke and fill. Depending on the exact colour you want you may want to delete the fill.If you have any other questions please post.I hope Sue does all her patterns the same. Scrappile
It is not your computer..... nothing for me is easy in Inkscape or Gimp.. just too many steps to do something that should be simple.... for an old feeble brain like mine... I can't remember why I go into any one room...How can I remember all the steps in Inkscape... OCtoolguy
I am going to butt in here and also ask a question but on another subject. I have a picture that I downloaded from Pinterest. I saved it as a jpeg and also as a pdf. I want to break the picture down into pieces so that I can print only what I need. Is there anybody who will work with me on how to do it? Either here on SSV or in a private atmosphere? Here is the picture I want to break apart. I want to "size" the circular portion to be 8.5" in diameter and I need to be able to size the small pieces so that they will match up in size proportionally. It is a spiral cut bowl but the pattern is for a CNC.
Dan
Ray, I'm not sure what you're asking. It looks like you have enough to be a pattern. That is a cool idea. I can't wait to see what you come up with. OCtoolguy

Dan, I need to be able to size it to fit the paper and to make sure that the little pieces are sized proportionally once I get the bowl to the size I need it. I'm not sure what would print from the download. And......I need to learn Inkscape at some point. So far, I have not successfully done anything that I have set out to do. I have a mental block or something.
jollyred
Ray, what you are wanting to do is called "scaling" the drawing. I will send you a pm on one way to do it, but it is too long to put into a post. Tom OCtoolguy
