Don't know if I'll use the 2 speeds, But the 735 has a blower inside that blows out the chips. The 734 has a reversible dust hood on the back. A couple of the videos said it was prone to backing up on the short side away from the nozzle. 

Once a year might depend on a few things.. 

First off, the quality of blades used.. The OEM ryobi blades were crap.. I found a dealer on eBay to buy better made ( better material ) than the OEM.. and they do last a while.

Once a year for blade changing isn't a very descriptive statement.. someone might only run 5 boards through in a year.. and another might run 500 boards a day..

If you run dusty gritty boards though the blades might last long enough to get 5-10 boards through it, LOL but changing the thickness of some already nice clean planed boards might last 2000 boards..

I run my planer quite a lot.. I change my blades about 1 time a year.. but about mid way through the year I flip the blades to the other side ( two sided blades ). 

While on the subject of blades.. You can get more life from them if you sharpen them.. I got this sharpening jig thing for Christmas a few years ago.. I know can run the same blades for a couple years.. This jig is a bit pricey.. there are videos on youtube to make your own jig using a table saw and cutting slots in a block of wood.. The jig I have is well made and actually clamps the blade in..

I bought a Cutech. It has the helical cutter. My neighbor was surprised how quiet it is. It does a great job and I am very happy with it. When I can afford a planer I am going to buy it from them also.

I have looked at that one off and on. I'll keep my eyes open for a used one. I seem to get lucky on used tools if I'm patient.

Fleet Farm had the DeWalt 735 Planer on sale last week for $150.00 off. It came with the table extensions and an extra set of blades. I couldn’t pass it up. I was never really happy with my old old Delta. 
The DeWalt has 3 knives and gives a very nice finish. The snipe is .003, not too tough to sand off. 
The chip blower on the DeWalt will blow the chips from here to Kingdom Come. Definitely need a chip “collector”

I do some re-sawing and the planer is a very valuable tool to have. Although you can hand plane the wood. 
 

I also think a jointer is a good tool to have. I have a Craftsman 6”. However, it is old and tired also, but for now it does the job. 
 

Based on doing mostly scrollsaw work, If I were to pick which tool, I’d go with the jointer.

That's a good deal. They won't ship and the nearest store is in Des Moines IA...over 300 miles away ! I get a 10% veteran discount at Lowe's, about $60 on this item, so that's better than nothing.

I've never had a planer or jointer, so maybe I'll upgrade my table saw first and keep looking for a good deal on the others. I'm thinking a good table saw is the most important power tool in a woodworking shop. And I don't have a good one. I've made do with a cheep Kobalt jobsite saw the last 2 1/2 yrs. Now I'm ready to go into more things done mainly on a table saw, although I'll still do most of my work on the King scroll saw.

I have had my Dewalt 735 for nearly 20 years and this year I upgraded the to a helical cutterhead.  The difference in noise alone was worth the upgrade, I can actually carry on a conversation while it is running now.  It was not cheap, but worth every penny.

Does it cut that much smoother to be worth the money?

For figured wood, it does cut cleaner and I also do not need to be as concerned with planing into the grain.

My next planer will be a helical head.. I really like the DeWalt planers.. but i have a hard time seeing nearly a grand for a DeWalt by the time you buy the machine and then get the cutter head.. then taking it apart etc to do the work.. There are decent planers already with the Helical head in the $500 price range..
