ben2008
Does anyone have and use this benchtop downdraft table? If so, what are the pros and cons? oldhudson
There was an extensive discussion regarding downdraft tables recently. Here's the link ben2008, OCtoolguy and John B 2
kmmcrafts
I bought a second box fan and a furnace filter set it right on the end of my sanding station / table.. A huge reduction of dust residual is noticed when I go into the shop the next day.. Quite a lot cheaper than one of these.. The downside is I have to take the filter off after every day and tap off all the dust.. When I bought my filter(s) I bought a 4 pack of really cheapo filters for under $5. I used them all at once with a bungee cord holding them in place. They caught a ton of dust but I had to be very careful or if I bumped the fan, the dust would all fall out on the floor. I'm going to upgrade my filter and thought I'd ask you. I don't know the exact ones I buy.. I've used a little of this and that over the years.. so brands etc varies.. I try to buy the ones for allergies.. They aren't exactly cheap but I just reuse them over and over.. I take them outside and tap the filter on the light pole I have in my yard.. most of the loose dust falls off.. Once in a while I will either use the air hose or a vacuum to clean them up better.. I've been using the one I have right now for about 2 years, LOL.. The material looks just about like the same stuff as the outer filter on the ceiling hanging air filtration. I often wonder if one of those 3 or so inch thick furnace filters would work better.. I bet the price of one it crazy.. the one I use is just 1" thick I believe.. and 20 x 20 I just set it at the back of the fan and the suction of the fan holds it in place.. I've heard or seen somewhere where you can get aluminum mesh filters and spray them with something that makes the dust stick but will rinse off with a hose.. They are made much like a cooktop ventilation filters but on a larger scale.. imagine they aren't very cheap.. I try to get mine when they're on sale or something.. tomsteve
i built a DD into my workbench folling this guys video. for the center section with the dust veins i just ripped 3/4" down to 1" wide instead of all the routing( he coulda used a downdraft table to do all that routing!). it works great, costs less, and doubles as my workbench( not good to work on things with small screws, though). one thing i would do differently is run all of the veins at a diagonal to the dust port OCtoolguy, OzarkSawdust and GrampaJim

nrscroller
HI I don't make big stuff so I made a box shape, put pegboard on the top and stapled router mat to it, put a dust port in the back and I am all set. Way cheaper than grizzly Bill OCtoolguy and ben2008

Have you ever noticed whatever you drop always goes under something and not out in the open? Invariably it rolls under my workbench lower shelf and I MUST get down on all fours to find it. I use my extendable magnet a lot. John B, tomsteve, ben2008 and 1 other 1

Woodmaster1
I am going to make a downdraft table and use the bathroom exhaust fan when I replace it with a new one. I will post picks when done. It might be awhile because I am procrastinating climbing in th attic to replace it. Woodmaster1
No drawings just a thought when I change out bathroom exhaust fans. I did see a couple of designs in shopnotes magazine. I will use one of those with modifications. I know it's bad being an old industrial arts teacher but so much of the things I make are on the fly. If it's something that works out I will draw it up when I sub for the cad teacher at the Vocational School. Which is about 4 or 5 times a year.
