If it needs repair be careful about sending it out to be fixed mine has been in the shop for 6 months Delta is slow about sending parts, they tink you should buy a new one. I had a delwalt 7988 and it was out for repairs not warentee but they had it for 30 days so I called dewalt and they sent em out a repairman and I got in 4 days free of charge that's makes the dewalt a much beter saw

I have been doing mechanical work all my life.  Never have "Taken" anything in to a repair shop.  If you ever want someone else to repair your Delta saw, take it to a Dewalt repair shop.

Over the the years, you see negative reviews about Delta repairs.   Members here seem to like their repair work better.  Same saw, different color.

  • 2 weeks later...

Not sure where are are located and what kind of temperatures you have.. if it's quite cold out my old DW would do this until it warmed up good.. sometimes just running it erratically with no load on it for a couple minutes would do the trick.. run fine until I come in the house to warm up or eat.. go back out.. same thing until it run for a few minutes.. even times it wouldn't even start at all without pushing on the blade chuck to get it a push start so to speak.. A few times I'd take a space heater and place it where the heat could warm the motor up a few minutes and it work as normal turning on by itself.. Summer time run great.. didn't like the cold I guess.. course neither do I but... LOL

Anyway, just a thought too..

Could be possible to have the circuit board going bad. I know it happens but most times the motor itself is not the issue..

Jerry I live in the Cincinnati ares there is no a Dewalt repair shop in this area or the Dayton area and I was told that the one in Columbus is or has been closed and the nearest one is in PA. When I took my delta in for repairs it was under their protection plan  so I Thought I would just take it dto them to be repaired, well that was a big mistake.

igot my father-in-laws old 2 speed Delta and it had a similar problem - i pressed hard on the switches and it was a loose connection- opened up the switch cover and tugged and pushed on the internal wires connecting to the switches and that cleared it up.  Put the cover back on and that fixed it. Good luck with your situation.

Jerry I have to agree with you. I fix all of my own stuff. It is in my heritage LOL

Kevin vicknair  How old is the saw? I am also leaning towards a mechanical issue. These saws seem to be notorious for dry bearings. I just fixed a EX21 for a friend and found this. This is the pitman arm that connects the motor to the arms of the saw. As you can see the bearing was actually rusty.  Several of the other bearings were also dry.

I am no familiar with how the delta is put together, bot my EX has a hole in the end of the motor so that you can put a screwdriver in and turn it. It should turn freely. The hole is on the opposite side of the first picture below,
