a cheap way to hang pictures and plaques

I dont know if any one will be interested or not but figured i put this up just in case.  Im real big into recycling.  Instead of buying the wood hangers all the time i use the pop tabs from soda bottles... all you have to do is take off the thin part that covers the hole and then you can nail them to back of plaques and pictures , just mmake sure you leave a little bit over the edge or you can bend the back a little so a nail or what ever can be slid into the hole ..... just an idea if anyones interested

I think i will keep buying my hangers they are so cheep , That looks like work to me

Believe it or not, we rarely ever have Pop Top Tabs in our house as neither of us like to drink any thing from cans!

I can also see that the work may not hang straight as the tab is rounded and not necessarily self centering.

That being said, I aplaud you idea and commitment to recycling..

I have both types. I drill pilot holes for both types.

I use the hammer on kind and use a miniature ice tongs to find the balance point. As soon as I seen the ice tongs I knew exactly what I was going to do with it. I sharpened it up to just leave a tiny hole in the wood, unseen!

I prefer the ones with the screws.  I do a couple craft shows and I have had a few of the hammer type get loose taking them on and off the rack multiple times but I have never had an issue with the screw type.  I typically do not drill a pilot hole but I use an awl to make a small starter.

I buy my hangers made in the US usually 100-200 at a clip.  They cost about 8 cents a piece.

I usually end up gluing them to the back with superglue.  Too afraid to use the nails!!

humm never had any trouble with things hanging stright but i can see how it couldbe a proublem....i forgot to mention that with bigger pieces i use two.....i also forgot to mention i take tin snips and snip a small part for the nail or what ever to rest in.  Yes it does take a little more time but i have so many of them that time is not really a factor for me. lol and i do like to recycle when ever i can. that being said i do also use the saw tooth hangers from time to time depending on what im making to hang.

Didn't see any one list using a keyhole. One method is a keyhole bit for a router or dremel. No hardware other then the screw or nail in the wall. RJF

As a framer, we use d hangers and wire for framing projects.  The supplies for medium projects are listed on our website.

I use Floral wire,I buy a couple of bundles for a few bucks and it lasts quit awhile.I just nail a couple of braids wraps the wire,then finish nailing in the braids. Simple and cheap.

I think I have and do use most methods of hanging items, from key holes to picture wire.
The cheapest and one of the strongest I have found, is to use thin sash cord and staple it to back of the frame, doubling it over at the fixing points.
Another style I like is this method from the Wooden Teddy Bear . (They don't seem to have them anymore )

I would guess sash cord would take a bit of weight. More then a little scroll sign. RJF

I tend to use screws. When I do use nails, I have to hold them with forceps since my fingers are highly sensitive to hammer strikes.

I use sawtooth most often on scroll projects, usually with E6000 or screws, depending on the thickness of material I'm attaching to.

I never did care for saw tooth hangers, they're utilitarian, but there are much better ways to hang things.  Like Denny, in my business, we do use some "D" hangers and coated picture frame wire, but for anything bigger that a standard 8" x 10" frame we use a product called "Z BAR".  We purchase it in bulk from one of our framing suppliers, but recently, we were in homedoppie and saw a product that is very similar but is available in single use packages.

I have no problem using the sawtooth picture hanger, just put it on the piece upside down (sawtooth pointing up)

But be sure to buy this type of saw tooth hanger

 

the little rectangular slots work fine for hanging
