crupiea Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 I usually cut 1/8" baltic birch but it is only so thin. I have always anted thinner material but of course i am cheap and dont want to actually pay for anything cheaper. Thought of trying some veneers but again, a bit pricey just for an experiment. Got to thinking that beer cans would be perfect. I first cut off the top and bottom, it was just a curly thing at this point. Next I ironed it on a big paperback book for about 4 minutes. Took quite a bit to get it to relax. Sandwiched it between 2 pieces of 1/8" scrap and cut out some letters and stars. Turned out great. I will certainly figure a way to start using this method more often. The best part is sourcing the material!! danny, wombatie, OCtoolguy and 4 others 5 2 Quote

I just ordered a gross of #2 Super Pikes. $20.76 that's $.14 per blade. Considerably cheaper than traditionable blades which I also use. OCtoolguy and crupiea 1 1 Quote
Jim McDonald Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 Get some aluminum flashing in the roofing section. Not as cheap, but also not curled. crupiea and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote
WayneMahler Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 Interesting. Never tried beer cans but have done paper in the same way. May have to try this when I get time to play. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
heppnerguy Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 I always enjoy seeing the art pieces you post here. I too would love to see some you have done using the beer cans. I have not had much time on the computer for awhile so perhaps you have posted some of it on the bragging forum. I will go look and see. Dick heppnerguy OCtoolguy 1 Quote
teachnlearn Posted January 11, 2021 Report Posted January 11, 2021 I've looked at the pattern library. I can't find the topic for beer can patterns. Some may have caught I don't use smilies. My browser freezes when I click on it. RJF OCtoolguy 1 Quote

TAIrving Posted January 12, 2021 Report Posted January 12, 2021 So, what blades would one use to cut glass? Jewelers blades maybe? Just asking for a friend. My wife actually. She laughed when I told her about the beer cans but got interested when I mentioned glass/bottles. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

dgman Posted January 12, 2021 Report Posted January 12, 2021 I wouldn’t even consider cutting glass on a scroll saw. First, you would have to use water to lubricate the blade. Then, all that glass slurry would accumulate in the bearings and just destroy them! OCtoolguy 1 Quote
John B Posted January 13, 2021 Report Posted January 13, 2021 Now you have me perplexed, Do I take the cans back for 10c each return, or cut them up ????????????????? OCtoolguy, OzarkSawdust and ben2008 3 Quote

kmmcrafts Posted January 13, 2021 Report Posted January 13, 2021 That $0.10 can might be able to turn into a $20 item with about 15 hours of work designing a pattern and sawing up the said design.. Gosh that seems like a better deal than buying wood.. Sounds like a great bargain for those that only care to cover your cost and replenish your cutting medium.. This way you're replenishing your beverage and scroll sawing materials.. John B and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
