Just bought a roll of 3M packaging tape at CVS because I had run out of my regular tape. Pathetic. I'm wondering if they provide a cheap version to CVS? The crap won't stick to my wood! kmmcrafts Posted February 4, 2021 Report Share Posted February 4, 2021 I rarely use tape on wood anymore but I've had some packing tape that would hardly stick to the boxes I was packing up.. real annoying trying to get orders packed and the tape peeling off after you stick it.. I agree.. hard to beat the Duct brand stuff.. I like the Duct " Easy Start " kind as it's quiet when you unroll it.. seems heavier and stronger than most the others. I moved our family multiple times and bought cases of 3M tape and loaded it into tape guns. Moved over seas, cross country, humid storage for years, repacked old boxes and taped torn ones together. The wife brought home some off brand stuff and I doubt it would have stuck even if you used a staple gun it. I have heard a lot of good about Duck Brand. Maybe it's made by 3M ? The problem with adherence to a carton these days could be that the carton has high recycled content. Shorter fiber strands are much tougher for tape to adhere to, requiring in many cases a better tack in the adhesive. The three types of adhesive in descending order of popularity and ascending order of cost are hot melt, acrylic, and natural rubber. If you're looking to use packaging tape, hot melt will be the type with an amber tint and a tackier release, while acrylic is clear with a freer release. Natural rubber is pretty much limited to duct tape. The perception is since acrylic releases so easily that it isn't as sticky as hot melt, but that isn't true. Acrylic has a faster and stronger tack than hot melt, so a release agent is applied to the back of the carrier to enable using the tape without having to fight it to get it off of the roll. In a freezer environment, acrylic is the adhesive used as nothing else will work on cases of frozen or soon to be frozen product. Look around and see if you can find Shurtape. It's a good quality tape that will cost less than 3M...if that kind of thing matters to you. This is likely more about tape than anyone really wanted to know. The best product you can use is " GLAD Press N Seal " from your grocery store. It is like GLAD Saran Wrap. About 10" wide and it sticks to the wood. Peals off easy when you remove it. It is clear and you can see your wood thru it. Pull off what you need and press it on. I use a roller to take out any bubbles. I'm not any kind of expert on tape but whatever sticks long enough to get the job done is what I want. I also like it be be as thin as possible. Nah, unless it's something that you've relied on for a living over a decade or so...which enables scoring fairly well on a pop quiz. There is a lot more where that came from, but is it useful? It is a pain to get off and very easy to miss a sliver during removal that will show up when you are putting on a finish. Painters tape for very small projects or removable Contact brand shelf liner (clear) for the rest of the projects. except on Intarsia there the pattern goes directly on the wood since it gets sanded off during shaping anyway . Phantom Scroller Posted February 9, 2021 Report Share Posted February 9, 2021 I buy 2" tape sellotape three rolls for a pound in Poundland UK always worked for me. I use repositional spray glue on the patterns stick them to the wood then tape on top when it's done peels right off. Works great, I guess it's what works out for you best that matters.
