rustynail Posted February 23, 2021 Report Share Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) After reading the “Wood Gear Clock” post I saw that some of the companies that had plans for clocks also had kinetic sculptures that looked cool and I am thinking about making one. Has anyone made one and if so what are your thoughts and what company did you buy it from? Or what company would you recommend? From what I have been looking at some sell the plans but not the spring or hardware? If you have made one were or what did you do for hardware as far as obtaining it? I do not have that much confidence in myself... Clayton Boyer has some nice ones, and there are many others on the internet... Now saying that, I am thinking about doing this one... Not really because of Kinetic Sculpture but I was always interested in the old "Hit and Miss" engines that I saw at fairs.... This reminded me of them.... I have sent a question to Clayton.... Have always admired them and the artist who designs them. @preprius once you start on this maybe make a blog posting about it. I think a lot of folks would be interested in seeing the progress. I've never cut anything thicker than 1/4 inch. The frame for this is 3/4 BB. Suggestions for blade size and saw speed for this 3/4 material would be appreciated. That is going to be an interesting project.... Have you dealt with Clayton Boyer before.... If not, do not be hesitant to email him questions you may have.. I have always found him very responsive, fun to converse with and he is always willing to help.. Yesterday I emailed him twice with questions on the project I want to take on and I had responses to both email in very short order... Asking about what blade to use on 3/4" BB, I would use a #3 Pagas MG.. Lots of people would go to a #5 and maybe they are correct,,, but #3 is the largest I have... dgman Posted February 25, 2021 Report Share Posted February 25, 2021 For 3/4 hardwood or BB, I would use a #5 or larger. Saw speed is up to you. I tell my students to start with a medium speed. If you are cutting and it’s dragging, turn up the speed. If you can’t stay on the line because the speed is too fast, slow it down. Saw speed is a matter of comfort.
