Well wlhat can I get it for he said tat there was a little over 50 BF.and I could have it for $125 I agreed tp that and bought 8 ft of 6" soft maple for $37 I knew I had a good deal and I figured it out @ 53 board ft . They were of random with 3<5 the smallest and 12" the largest, any way I got the 53BF for $2.35 a BF at regulaar price they would have been $165.00

Ike, do you ever proofread your posts? I follow everything you write but at times it's very difficult. Please don't take offense. Just a suggestion.

My local lumber yard is $2.10 board ft.. I bought 118bdft in Dec. my total was $247

That said, I only get that price because of two reasons.. First being if you buy over 100bdft they discount the price.. and the other reason is if you spend a certain amount with them every year they put you in different price brackets for the year.. I spent $8000 with them so my price bracket puts me in at real low price points. Normal 1/8 BB ply runs near $16 per 5 x 5 sheet.. my price is $11..

Nice buy, I pay 2.75 bft regularly! I have the formula on my phone so when I go to my local shop I can check them as they add ;)

@Rockytime

Board feet IMO has several interpretations...

Board feet = length(ft) * width(in) * thickness(in) / 12

Example:

16' x 9.75" x 1" / 12 = 13 board feet

However, many lumber yards will use a simpler calculation (it assumes boards to be 1" thick)

length (in) x width (in) / 144

192" x 9.75 = 13 board feet

You'll notice that if you use the top calc with a 3/4" board which is an actual size the board feet is significantly lower - 9.75 board feet

Was that at Paxton's? It's been a while since I've been there. It may be time to take another trip.

Isn't you second calculation "liner foot" as oppose to "board foot"... Liner foot is just length x width and usually assumes 1" thick but in reality is usually 3/4" thick..

Board footage is figured on the rough stock size (before it goes thru the planer). A board 6" wide x24" long x 1" thick which will actually be 3/4" will be priced as 1 board foot. A board that is 6" wide x24" long x2" thick which is actually 1.5 inches will be sold as 2 board feet. Should also add that hard woods are sold by the 1/4 thickness. A one inch board is considered 4/4 a two inch board is considered 8/4 a 1.5 inch board before it is planed is 6/4 which would net you out to about 1 1/8" thick after planing.

Nope - linear foot here is price times length - thickness doesn't matter - that's how they calculate it here

I get Pine by the linear foot - 2.45 per foot

What if you want to buy a piece 2 feet long and 4 inches thick by 6 inches wide? Are you saying that it would be $2.45 for each foot? That makes no sense. I'll bet you are paying $2.45 per board foot. I'd like to see how they calculate your cost on a board 6" wide x 1" thick by 10 feet long. If what you are saying, you'd only pay $24.50. Is that right?

octoolguy described a BF correctly early on herein.  However, a BF is usualy based on rough sawn dimensions.  So when you pay by the BF for say "a dressed 1X6" you are paying for the waste and getting only 3/4 X 5 1/2.   Lumber yards that sell dressed lumber ususally sell by the LF (linear foot) and the price per LF may vary based on the length of boards available.

Some specially lumber providers sell rough sawn material priced by the BF for the various spiecies.  This can be quite cheap but they will charge for planing services over and above the BF price.  This can be as much as an extra $1/bf.  Rough sawn is only great if you own a planer and can plane you own material to the thicknesses you want.

You really can not equate BF prices to stock dressed lumber, but need to compare LF pricing.

I buy lumber at the same place as Kevin. I got that kind of prices when I bought 1000bdft of quartersawn red oak and 350 bdft of poplar. I don't get the big discount anymore haven't  spent a lot lately.

Right, It's hard to get into those price brackets unless you buy a lot of tools and or lumber.. LOL.. having this CNC helps me spend a lot of money with them.. buying bits, add-ons etc... and you can scrap a lot of lumber in one day if you don't know how to use the CNC correctly.. also can scrap $50 - 75 bits in 2 seconds if you don't know what you're doing.. don't ask how I know these things.. Not really wanting to tell the stories, Hahahaha.. Lately I've made a lot of high dollar campfire wood.. should have plenty of wood to have smores every night this summer.. probably should start burning now so I can get rid of it all, LOL

Here is the last board I purchased 2 weeks ago (going tomorrow for a refill ;) )

Poplar 16' x 9.75" cost = $27.15
